Does anyone out there have a GPS system in their vehicle? If so, what brand would you recommend??

Garmin with the GPS 18 antenna plugged into the laptop's USB port. Inverter power and away we go. The built in search to locate anything and I mean anything is very handy. And drive right to it. In car fighting during navigation is nearly a thing of the past. I did get into the situation were the wife said turn right and the gps said turn left. I listened to the wife and let us get lost. A small price to pay for long term calm.

My wife and I have a Garmin Streetpilot i2. It is a plain jane get the job done GPS. I love it because the thing is tiny and easy to take with you and switch between vehicles or hide. It is about the size of a baseball which in my opinion is just right, especially since it tells you when to turn anyway.

Both my mom and sister have other models and in my opinion they are too damn big, each of them is the size of a softball or better. My mom's even plays mp3's too. Big whoop, that is why I have a stereo.

Plus the bonus also is that everybody seems to think they need color screens and mp3 capabilities, that makes the i2 quite cheap.

Here is my experience with GPS. Cousin stopped up with his own GPS using it in a rental car. We decided to all go out to one of our local casinos. For the fun of it, just in case he got lost he wanted to see if the GPS would take him to the casino we were going to. Funny thing, he only could find the other casino and some in Alantic City but NOT the casino we were going to. This got me thinking...

Do you have children? Do you take them on car trips?
One of the best investments for a quiet trip can be Microsoft Streets and Trips with GPS loaded on a laptop that is plugged into a cheap 400 watt inverter. For around $150 you have up-to-date maps and a live link to inform of nearby highlights and construction slowdowns in traffic.

We have both a Magellen (sp) and a TomTom. Won't go anywhere unfamiliar without one. Just saw a site the other night that has laws on radar detectore and Minnesota says you can't hang ANYTHING from windshield.

OH, yea... If you have a BASS PRO Shop near by they have all kinds of GPS's in stock and will even let you play with them and explain to you all the features, very good place for some hands on research..

Dave, I can only comment on 2 different systems. We bought a new Ford Fusion last spring with the factory installed GPS nav system. Very easy to use and a nice big screen. It does almost everything that my older Garmin iQue 3600 does. Both systems are very nice and WILL get you to where you want to go without looking at a printed map. I really like the Garmin systems and their mapping software (City Navigator�) seems to be about the best in my opinion. I've updated my map software once in the 4 years that I've had it and am about to do it again. ($75) I have a 1 gig memory card in my unit which is enough to (barely) hold map data for 48 states. Most stores will let you look at the units that they have. Pick the one that has the most user friendly, to you, display.

GARMIN, absolutly the best you can get.
I've been using my oldd Garmin GPS40 connected to a laptop ever since it came out, many many years ago. I use a mapping program on the laptop and the GPS tells it where we are.
The newer ones have the maps built in now and work very good, some will even talk to you and tell you when to turn and stuff.

I'm an Avionics Tech with Sikorsky and install and use/test them daily. Find a Pilot, should be some on here and ask him if he has used a Garmin 430. Chances are he knows what it is even if he's never used one. 90% of the aircraft we build gets one in it by customer request.

Some of the car rental places have the TOMTOM type that they will rent out to you for a couple of days.

We are replacing our Garmin 155 in our Bell 212s and 412s with the 420W. Pilots seem to really like them. I like the fact that they have a VHF built into them in case one of the King 908s fails. Also, looks like I�ll be getting a new S-76C++ here soon. It will have the 420W or 430.

You'll like the 420, much better then the 155.
Havent seen a 155 in a couple of years. Once in a while we get a 420, sometimes a 530 but mostly 430's. We've almost done away with all the Bendix/King stuff, too many issues with them any more. ( I think there made in China now)
Garmin also makes a very good transponder.

We havent started installing the WAAS capable ones yet, but engineering says Garmin is switching to all WAAS units for avation and we wont be able to get the others soon. My guess is first of the year we'll change.

The King 905 and 908 have always been a problem, and I understand that all of our new 76�s and 92�s have been delivered with Collins. We switched to 420W because Garmin quit making the 420. Our IFR machines in the states still use Trimble as far as I know (I don�t go up there very often).
