I recently acquired a small Curtis compressor.
Flat belt driven with 10.75" flat belt pulley
2 1/8 bore x 2 1/2" stroke
Patent date of Nov 1921
Model B246 B50219
The flywheel has a flat oblong plate that moves in & out via centrifugal force. The plate contacts an arm that moves an unloader valve sitting atop the intake valve.
The compressor is in very good shape but the external arm and spring-ball bearing unit is somewhat worn or bent.
This is the first compressor I have seen with this sort of governor/unloader assembly.
If you have iny info on the unit I would appreciate hearing from you. I will likely run the compressor with a 1921 2 hp Hercules stationary engine.

I have a Curtis compressor built in 1938 and is my shop compressor. The piece you are describing is the centrifugal unloader for when it stops on the unit. When it gave out, I removed it and never noticed any difference in performance. I power mine with a 1-1/2 hp 220 volt single phase electric motor. If you are going to use gas engine power, you will need some sort of unloader and a pop off valve to bleed off the excess air unless you leave a valve open somewhere all the time. An exploding air tank can be deadly to all around it. Curtis is still in business they dated mine by the serial number.
