How to hookup trailer brakes?

I am trying to rewire the electric brakes on a trailer. The wires were pulled off and I don't know how to put them back on properly. The brakes have 2 identical wires coming out of them. I assume one wire is a ground, and the other should be power from the brake controller in the truck. This is on a tandem trailer with 4 total brakes. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will help, but here are some helpful links. I did not know there were actually standards for this type of wiring(although they do not reference that actual standard name or code)

Look at>Link

It>Link gives a good description of proper trailer wiring; there is actually a code for this type wiring.

Also look at:

Kevin, if you have a meter you can tell if one of those wires is ground. The other wire will read resistance but the ground will be a dead short, no resistance. I seriously doubt if one wire is ground. Any brakes I've seen the wires just run from each end of the brake coil. Hope this helps, ray

Unfortunately, you are going to have to pull the wheels and see which wire is which. On some it may not matter as the coil of the magnet is not attached electrically to the frame, on others it is.

You need to know for fact on this with a physical inspection because if you wire it wrong, you'll create a dead short for other circuits. You can't check it with a light or meter because you will read through the coil itself giving a false reading.

Once you figure out where everything goes, write yourself a note and keep it for future use because you know it's likely to happen again just about the time you forget what was what and it'll save you from the trouble a second time around.

I agree! I just experienced this, I just connected the wires without checking like Mark said. I blew the 40A trailer fuse under the hood and it took me 3 evenings to find out why the taillights, stoplights wouldn't work.

Kevin, I personally don't have a clue, but on this same board is a discussion titled "Electrical Plug.... Help!" on or about 6/21/01 about the same subject! I found it again by clicking on page 2 of this very board!

Good Luck!
