I`ve been using a Fram, think it`s a PH16, on my Ford 1720 for 13 years now with no ill affect. I know that alot of people have the blanket impression that there are better filters than Fram on the market but to that I say it depends on what criteria makes one filter better than another in your particular circumstances. From reading a couple of filter tests several years back I remember that certain brands of filter, Wix being one of them, filtered smaller particles when new, but many of those filters also blinded and started flowing through the bypass sooner as well. It`s also a fact with mechanical filters that as larger chunks of debris get trapped on a filter, the effective pore sizes get smaller thus causing them to filter to a smaller size particle. There are other factors to consider when choosing a brand filter, one of the most important being durability of construction but I`ve only had one filter ever break apart on me and it was a NAPA Gold, which if I`m not mistaken is a Wix. I am not at all badmouthing Wix on one failure either, I still use them as applicable. As a final thought, just be sure that your warranty will not be voided by your oil filter choice. My Dodge truck has a Cummins engine and they have a list of approved filters, Fram is not one of them, although I may have used a few on the occassions where I was in a pinch for an oil change. To add to this I read on a Dodge Diesel discussion forum recently where FleetGuard apparently manufactured a batch of bad filters which broke apart in use subsequently blocking oil journals within several engines. The end result was several ruined Cummins engines. FleetGuard is the OEM filter manufacturer for Cummins if I`m not mistaken. I guess my point is to change your oil regularly, keep on eye on the engines vital signs, and don`t agonize over using a Fram filter.
