I thought about making an engine compression tester, but was told that i should make a leak down tester as this is more sensible on a diesel engine. could any one tell me if i could make one out of a tyre pump, tap and a decent gauge, and if so what pressures should i use and how should i interpret the results? thanks for your help.

i allways like to take a compression test first and if there is a problem then i would just shoot shop air into the cylinder and see where the leakage is from to futher diagnose the problem.
lust my two cents worth.

NAPA and other auto parts store sell them and they come with instructions. Actually, to do the job right, you need both a compression tester and a cylinder leakdown tester.
