95 Dodge Cummins

can anyone direct me to the proper forum for this Question?... Having Trouble with the Cummins losing prime in the fuel pump and taking a bit of cranking before firing up ,, At 1st I thought it was water ,, Drained out very little though... Thanx Jim

Yup...the fuel return line is rotted out and your losing prime.
Look back behind the fuel filter and find the rubber return line from the fuel pump.
Relpace it with 3/8 marine grade fuel line.
It will get to the point it will not start unless you hand prime and bleed the system.
Be advised...it's a bear to get to.

These trucks have a pressure relief valve where the fuel line exits the main pump. If the spring gets weak it will not have enough standby pressure to allow it to start properly. Also these engines have a piece of hose in the return line behind the fuel filter which can become hard and cracked which allows for fuel cavitation since it returns to the lift pump.

BTDT , First replace the lift pump . Save yourself some buck and go to your friendly local Case I H dealer and get one from them , You will have to change the inlet fitting from your old pump to the new one . If ya still have the problem then the next place t to look is at the sending unit coming out of the tank . On mine i had the same problem that almost drove me goofy . As i looked at it three times and never saw a wet spot . Then one day i took an other look and was just scratchen some flaky rust off and it just fell off . If ya need a new sending unit best take your NITRO PILLS with ya , i buy at dealers cost and still got sticker shock. And that was on a Reman . Ya don't want to know what new costs.

Are you losing prime to the lift pump or the injection pump. Mechanical or electric pump...

Had an 89 with 12 valve and mechanical lift pump, fuel line in frame rail rotted just enough to allow air in to line below pump, pinholed at a high spot in line, would not leave a puddle but did allow fuel to drain back and fill line with air...

All mechanical, 12 valve motor,, 1995 .. Not Sure what is happening ,, 289 thousand miles , Off road and thru cornfeilds and over 34 States ,, 4 years ago had a new lift pump put on her .. have not noticed anyleaks or smells ,, ,, Will check the frame rail for a clue ... Been a VERY GOOD TRUCK !
