I just bought an old copper Childs Foamite fire extinguisher yesterday at an antique store. I have done a google search for dating this thing but came up with nothing. I would like to find out when this thing was made if possible.

I've been trying to polish it up with steel wool and Brasso, but it is a slow process. Any suggestions with the dating or the polishing would be greatly appreciated.

As far as finding the date on the thing, you might pose that question to the AmericanLaFrance collectors on Yahoo!groups. ALF bought Foamite at some point, IIRC.

I buy the copper fire extinguishers to sell them for copper scrap. At 2 bucks a pound, i'll never polish a copper fire extinguisher.

Years ago in the 1970s, I had a good many of those old Copper units to clean. The fire inspectors that came to the company I worked for were replacing them with modern extinguishers. The old ones were no longer legal. I was able to buy them for $5.00 each from the inspectors. After that, the inspectors saved all the ones from other local companies and I bought them.

I found that that many of them had a coat of lacquer on them. I used paint remover on them first to get it off. Then I used Twinkle copper cleaner (found in local supermarket) with a Brillo soap pad in a tub of warm water. The finish came out a clean pink color, but the soap pads being steel wool, left less of a shine. I then buffed the copper with White Diamond rouge on a 10" buffing wheel. I worked restoring metal work for antique shops as a side job for over 20 years and did more polishing then I care to remember.

I used to get it at a law enforcement supply but I just googled it and got 65000 hits - everywhere from Amazon dot com to ebay to auto shops. It's the very best metal polish in the world.

Personally I would skip the elbow grease and Brasso and go with Simichrome polishing paste. Wipe on, wipe off, and copper or brass is clean and bright.
