I have had a Kinetico for 10 years. They cost more up front but sav a lot on salt. I use 2 bags per year we have fairly hard water here.Its imposable to run out of soft water. when one tank is drawn from the other is regenerating. the use no electricity. operation is completely by water flow.

We've had a WaterBoss for 11 years. Neighbor has Kinetico. He paid $2,200 installed for his; we paid $450 and I installed it myself. I can buy a lot of salt for $1,750.

Thanks for the info. I got a brochure in the mail for a Kinetico unit that is "rent to own" for 10 bucks a month? Sounds too good to be true and I sort of wanted to own my equipment. I'll give them a call. I'll remember the seperate units and the septic system info. Thanks for your help. Bob

Kinetico is the only way to go. They cost alot more than the discount store variety but last forever. Mine just had it's thirtieth birthday this year. Maybe 2 service calls in that time.

What ever you do, don't dump the brine drain line into the septic system. The salt will slow the tank's action and dissolve the concrete lid.

If you have room, I suggest you go with a system that uses separate brine and resin tanks. Compact water softeners like those sold by Sears and Home Depot have small resin tanks that are prone to getting iron-bound.

I purchase a system from Ohio Pure Water three years ago and I've been very happy with it. The cost was comparable to buying a compact system from HD, but I had to assemble it. The resin beads can make a real mess if you spill any!.
