I am thinking of buying a Leatherman. Are they any good? Can they do some real work with them? If yes, what model is the one to get? How expensive are they? Thanks!!

Hi John Late reply here but my Leatherman saved me from being trapped inside the cockpit locker on my boat last year. I was inside the locker working on the diesel with a leaking fuel line when he lid blew shut and self locked. Being pitch dark in there I almost panicked but instinctively drew my Leatherman out and by touch alone removed the hinge nuts and extricated myself.

People forget, but a tool like that carried on your person can save your life. It could have happened at sea as I sail alone sometimes.

Several years ago, I found one laying on the street. Was one of the nicest "gifts" that anyone ever gave me. Tools are more usable than other makes include. Compact enough to carry in even dress pants pockets. I'm very happy with mine. As long as you understand that they are not a tool cabinet in your pocket, but that they will get you through in a pinch when the tool cabinet is not handy.

I've had a leatherman for years, use it just for small jobs. I leave it in my back pocket and walk around with it like that don't even notice it. I get real tools when there's something more important to do, but for around the barn you can't beat it. Treat yourself for Christmas or buy one for a friend.

I have had a couple supertools but they don't make them anymore, now I have the Surge, that is the one that comes with the bit set. I had one Gerber and what a piece of junk that is.

My daughter got me a Leatherman "Fuse" for father's day. I had complained about the non-clocking blades on my old Leatherman, and she got me this one with locking blades. MUCH better.

I have never had a Leatherman, but I have a GErber that I have had for over 10 years now, would not give it up for nothing. I left mine at work the other night, and I felt like I had lost my arm. So I guess it is what you are used to. They both are good tools.

John, My wife and I have had original Leathermen for years. She carries hers in her purse. She got me a new Wave two years back so my original spends most of its time in a drawer but the new one is ALWAYS on my belt. I have used them to cook, eat, repair things, and tighten/remove/fit "stuff" in hotels, tents and barracks from Hawaii to Kuwait and a lot of stops in between. Great around the home place as others have said about saving trips to get real tools for little jobs. They are also outstanding for fishing's odd tackle maint, hook removal, fish cleaning and dressing birds/small game. THe knife blades, files and saw blades seem to hold up fairly well for light duty. I haven't had to test the warranty yet. While some of the other troops liked Gerbers, I and many others preferred the Leatherman for work. Untill the time one of the avionics guys (who else) left his issue tool blocking the squat switch on an F-4 Wild Weasel in the Azores. . . He got around to reporting a "lost tool" on departure day. . . it took forty of us almost an hour to find it. . . got tougher to carry them at work after that. Buy the one you like best and enjoy it! Stumpalump hit the ail on the head.

I've got a Gerber (two actually), and if I'm around on the farm, I have one on my belt. They don't do anything really great, but they do everything really well. Pliers, side cutters, knife, flat-blade screwdrvier, phillips screwdriver, needle-nose, etc. Handy as hell all the time.

Not to mention, there's a couple other activites its surprisingly come in handy. If I help someone move, it's invaluable. Can use it to help put furniture back together, cut open boxes, tigheten knobs and fix other random stuff around the place, etc.

I have had my leatherman supertool for about 10 years now and worked the crap out of it on the dairy farm for about 8 of those years. I'm not sure that leatherman makes the supertool anymore, as I couldn't find one at wally world. I ended up with a Gerber diesel plier and honestly, I don't like it as well as my leathermans. I used my leatherman for all kinds of little jobs and it saved me tons of time. To actually work on something, they were not the tool to have, but they sure were handy for fixing little things like, lines for the watering cups for the cows, putting a chain back together that blew apart in the field, putting the knob back on the wife's kitchen cabinet, fixing fence, and that kind of stuff. I think I may have fixed my truck a few times too in a pinch. In the aspect of REAL work, you will want a good set of tools, but as an "AW NUTS!" tool, they are a real life saver!! Hope this has shed some additional light on the subject. Kippster

You asked if you can do some real work with them. The anser is no. They don't do any work well and you will still need your tools to do any real work. Where they do shine is that you allways have a crappy long nose pliers and crappy screw drivers with a crappy knife on you at all times saving you time from fetching real tools. You notice a loose hose clamp and you have a way to tighten it. Now if you are installing a new hose then you need to get a real screwdriver. Same with the pliers. They just save time for a quick adjustment but take more time if you are actually trying to do some real work. In other words, you need real tools first.

They are a handy tool, I got one as a gift years ago. Sadly it spends most of the time in a desk drawer. I found after carrying it for about 6 months that it was more convienent to carry my smaller swiss army knife and 4" Craftsman adjustable wrench. I found the leatherman was too cumbersome and heavy to carry on a regular basis, and a lot like the old Shop Smith machinery where you spent twice the time setting up as you did doing the job. But most of what I do these days I have roll-a-ways and tool belts readily at hand.
When we had the farm and things were not as handy, a leatherman would have been the ticket though.

Very handy pocket tool. I am an electrician. Nice for limited cutting, stripping wires. Emergency screwdrivers. Needlenose nice but not insulated, be careful. Stainless if I remember. About $35 ten years ago. Good tool for inspector, estimator. Pocket size, legal blade.
