The dome lights on my '93 Bonniville (which has been an EXCELLENT car) work only when manually turning the light switch. They will not light when any of the four doors are opened. This problem developed abot one month ago. Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Glenn F.

92 and up bonnevilles and their related chassis have had issues with their headlamp switch. its a common enough problem that most auto parts stores stock the switch. dave

Glen,

That is a ground searching circuit and is renouned for bad door switches and bad door wiring looms, especailly at it's "hinge" area boot.

If you've got light with the light switch, all is well with the power end of things.

I know nothing about a 93 Bonnivelle, but I have worked on alot of different cars and equipment over the years. Usually the dome light is turned on through switches located in the door posts. These switches either gonna make a ground or a hot leg to turn the light on. Long ago the circuit consisted of a hot leg to the light and the switchs made ground to the body to complete the curcuit. With the majority of the body being metal this was easy to do as the body itself eliminated alot of wiring. By the 90"s there was so much plastic that relays were being put to use quite frequently to eliminate some of the wiring that would otherwise have been required due to all the plastic eleminating convenient ground points. That said check for a relay somewhere that may have gone bad. The manual switch could be wired direct to turn on the light while the door switches go through a relay to allow multiple activation points. I may be way off here but it"s somewhere I"d start looking if it was mine.

check fuse #21. A 10 amp fuse
Might be the top left.
Might say remote dimmer control module.
I am having a hard time figureing out how the system works.
Heres a link if you can cifer it

Thanks Frankiee. I'll have to check the fuse. I hardly ever drive the car as it's my wife's. The fact that the lights work manually had me thinking it was not a fuse problem but I suppse it could be.
