How do you use a timing light on a diesel engine?

Hi Robert,
All the diesel engines and injection pumps I've seen have some method of static timing. This provides a means of timing a newly assembled engine, or re-installing the injection pump. The method Jon described is much more accurate, and should be done after you get the engine running. The good news is that once it's set, the timing won't change to the degree it can on a distributor equipped gas engine. Good luck...Al English

I know they make the adapters but I have never used one. Normally I use static timing. Most of the engines I work on have Bosch pumps and I simply remove the spring from the number 1 pump piston, have my engine set at the correct timing mark, then with a hand pump make diesel flow from the #1 port, roll the injector pump to right when it stops flowing (point of injection). Ofcourse this method doesn't allow you to check any type of advance mechanism. I'm not sure how to get precise settings on other pumps like roosamaster except for lining up the marks (which isn't very accurate at most times). Then you have others like the Cummins PT pumps that requires dail indicators and cam box shims (which I own the kit and it's made me a lot of money). I have seen numerous diesels burned up because the timing was off by a few degrees. I'll stop here in a sec, but I have found that most manufacturers timing marks are not very close at all, this is one reason that people like Deutz don't even use marks. You find true top dead center, calculate the degrees per inch/mm mark the hub or crank, then do point of injection and she will be on the money. On those particular engines though #1 starts at the flywheel!

On a JD 3020, you hook up the red clamp to the positive battery terminal, the black to the frame, then adapt the sparkplug lead to clamp on the #1 cylinder injector. Clamp on the PTO diesel timing thingy and throttle the engine to 1600 RPM (PTO speed of 540. Adjust the seat until the pto timing indicator points to the north.

Ray's method may only work on pre 1930's 3020's (;-)For most anything else they make an adapter that senses the vibration of the injector cracking. If I remember right they attach to the #1 injector line to sense vibration from the cracking injector. They work to check pump advance without removing pump and running on a test bench.
