Coal slag products are usually conveyed from the nearby power plant via pipes and high velocity water flows. Before screening and grading, the slag is stockpiled outside. Consequently, the slag has to be dried. The rising cost of energy is affecting the cost of Black Beauty. Shipping fuel surcharges are also having an effect. The offsite retail markup on Black Beauty has always been rediculous. If you are near a coal fired electric generating plant, call the utility plant and ask them who handles their slag. Reed Minerals, the maker of BB, has eighteen plants located in the eastern half of the country. There are other outfits, larger and smaller, that process slag. Calgon (?) is one but do a search on "coal slag". I used to buy directly from Reed Minerals near Concord, NH for considerable savings. Probably more than 60%. I was buying bulk (not bagged) for even more savings. All you need is a dump truck or tank on a trailer. If all you want is a bag or two now and then, forget trying to save money as a retail buyer. In that case, make your own sand by drying any granular material on your driveway. Punch below for a map of BB mfg sites.
