Anybody ever use these? I think they have a bunch of little rods coming out the bottom. I was considering buying one, I heard their good rust.

I'll go along with the other guys but add a few things. If the rust is real thick, needle scalers just don't cut it. I do a lot of work in the coal plants and to get through the thick heavy rust you have to use a solid chisel in an air hammer to bust it up. This is rust that can get over 1/2" thick in some places.

For slagging and peening welds, the needle guns work great. Thing to remember is you're gonna break needles all the time so get one with standard sized needles. 3mm and 4mm are the most common and you can use the 3mm in a 4mm gun.

If you're not planning on using it much, Harbor Freight and some others sell an adapter that fits any threaded barrel air hammer that holds the needles. You remove the spring or QD chuck for the chisels and screw on the needle holder. H-F also sells the replacement needles for $9.99 per set, cheapest place I've found so far.

Needle scalers are real nice when it comes to removing heavy coatings of flake rust. They ain't worth a dam for getting all the rust. Aint too bad at removing layers of caked on dirt and paint from heavy castings and weldments either. I usually scale of the heavy crap, then remove the rest with electrolosys, or convert it using phosphoric acid.
They also ain't the worst thing for chipping welds, if you'r in an area big enough to get the head in. A dull chisel makes a much better chipping hammer on big welding jobs.

I use one I bought from Northern. Sometimes I'll use it rather than sandblast. Depends on what I'm starting with and my expectations. Much rust and I usually sandblast. Real nice for cleaning up welds.

All I have heard is not to use them on tin or soft metal as they will stretch the metal and then we can learn how to fix dents. Great I've heard for cast iron blocks, draw bar's, etc.
