Reconditioned engine head storage

Got the MH44 head back today from the shop,had the valves done. The head is going into cold storage until spring,should it have oil or some product put on it to prevent the new surfaces from any possible rust during the winter.Any thoughts on the matter? Dan

I'd get a can of sticky spray grease and dpray it all over while it was hanging, then bag it in 2-3 garbage bags, and then wrap with newspaper and packing tape.

Get a can of Fluid Film, it is the best thing for steel in storage. I put some on a crankshaft, sitting in a non heated metal shed a year ago, the crank still looks new, I spray it on my lathe that sits in this same non heated building and still no rust. Great stuff. John Deere dealers used to sell it.

You might try going to a local motorcycle shop and buying some Maxima Chain Wax. It goes on like oil but sets up like wax. It will come off with mineral spirits or kerosene. Its a bit smelly though.

It might be a waste for a one time use but ZEP makes a product called Iron Clad. You could coat it in this stuff and let it set outside til spring and it wouldn"t rust. We sand blasted a housing at work once and coated it with the Iron Clad. I can"t remember exactly what happened but it actually set outside for nearly two years before it left the shop. The day it left it still looked like it was fresh out of the blast cabinet.

Yes, a light oil will do the trick,then wrap in an old blanket or towels. DO-NOT use plastic cause it will hold moisture. you can douse the blanket or towels in oil also.....
