Black Streaks on Shingle Roof

This is a little off topic, but I live in a rural area outside of Detroit. We are in the flight path of Detroit Metro Airport and get fallout from planes (black streaks on white trim) presumably from jet fuel.

This is a new one that has cropped up. On the north side of my house, I am getting black streaks down the shingles. None on the south and none on the pole barn that has an east and west facing roof. The shingles were replaced about 6 or 7 years ago with laminated architectural shingles. This phenomenon has just manifested itself this (well maybe last year).

Due to the pitch of the roof (and my 300# frame) it is tough to get up there for a close look.

I found an article by a person who is on a handyman show:

Link

This would indicate it's some type of mold or mildew, but I think it would be tough to get up and scrub the roof with copper sulfate.

Anyone have thoughts or suggestions as to where to go for some information on remediation?

Thanks,

JU

Jerry, your problem is 100% NOT FROM AIRPLANES. What you have is a form of mold that grows on the roof due to decay of sticks, leaves and other debris rotting on the roof.

Hi Jerry,

What Ryan said about using zinc is correct. Copper will work, too. I have to do the same thing to the north facing slopes of my roof. A long galvanized flashing of some kind is probably good enough, but I wish I could think of an inexpensive source of pure zinc in that configuration, or hot-dipped galvanized, at least. Another thing I though of trying is attaching a length of copper wire just below the ridgeline, or maybe copper pipe. One north sloping section of roof on my house is not visible from anywhere that matters, but one section is quite visible. That makes me not want to install anything too ugly or bizarre.

All the best, Stan

There is a narrow strip of zinc sold for this problem.A copper wire would work.Just about any metal will kill the fungus.

Had the same problem here in Georgia. Bought a gallon of a product called shingle shield. Mix it 10 parts water to 1 part shingle shield and spray on with a garden sprayer, let soak for 15 minutes and wash off. Roofing that has got a thick black area and moss will take another soaking. $35 a gallon but will do a 3,000 square foot house.

Thanks. Explains a lot. A little pricey but should work. Now I have to talk son into going up and put it on.

Jerry,

The solution for this problem in the roofing business is to preempt it. What is done is to nail pieces of zinc to the roof at the peak. As the water runs across the zinc and down the roof it coats the roof a bit and does not allow for the mold to grow.

I don't know if this would be powerful enough to clean it, but once you get it clean it will keep it clean.

Hit it with bleach/water solution. Let it sit for a few minutes and rinse it. It'd be gone. You can use a garden sprayer. DO NOT use a pressure washer.

Bleach wont help bad cases. It will kill moss.I see a lot of white and gray roofs turning black.Notice that there is no black below lead flashed chimneys or galvanized antenna mounts.A white roof should last longer because of lower surface temperatures.New shingles seem to be poor,A lot of steel roofing is going on here.

Be aware of bad advice including mine. However, I can add what worked for me 8 years ago and what I would do now. First, I like the idea of evaluating commercially available solutions such as "shingle shield". I would follow up on these first. However, I had the same ugly problem. Clorox(dilute sodium hypochlorite)would make a attempt would would not cut it as stated earlier. Thus I made chlorine based oxidizer by mixing calcium hypochlorite with water in my garden sprayer. I don"t remember the concentration I used, but start weak with perhaps 1/4 cup/gallon and juice it up as needed (read safety precautions). Calcium hypochlorite can be found at home depot or any pool supply house generically known as "pool shock". The watch out is a white residue left on the roof that does not want to wash off easily. No problem, a weak solution of acitic acid(vinegar)in the garden sprayer will put the salts back solution and it will wash off eaisly. Thus, a two step process. (My roof looked like new). Third, it is obvious that zinc will kill/prevent as most roofs are clean below galvinazed fixtures on roofs as stated earlier. Copper should be similar. I am just not sure either will remove/clean what has already grown. But, I would be tempted to give it a try. The original post suggested copper sulfate which I can"t think of how to buy a small amount cheap. I would substitute a copper based algicide which can also be found at home depot or a pool store.
Good luck, read warning labels, try small area first, and pay no attention to any of my ramblings if you are uncomfortable handling chemicals.

Jerry, Your problem is not the airplanes. I live over 100 miles from a major airport, in a rural area, and my white roof has done the same thing.
