My 98 Chev Ex cab Pickup's engine check light just came on. I went to plug in my code reader and the plug is different. Had to go to the GM dealer. $50.00 and 5 minutes later he said it was an O2 sensor and cleared the computer said it could have been a tank of bad gas or 1 of the 2 O2 sensors might be bad. This happen twice so I went looking for a new code reader.None of the Autosuppy dealers know what I am talking about. I searched on the Net and found a Scan Tool by a company called Actron. It has the OBDII plug.Is this tool any good or should I look for something else. It is $199 US over $300 Canadian. I would be thankfull for any information.

All I can say is I love my 71 Olds vista cruiser wagon! 400,000 miles on the body and 137,000 on the engine and trans, and still going strong! I also use it to tow my 6000 lb steamboat and my tractors with and get 18 MPG doing it!By the way , it still has stock ignition points! Best truck I ever owned! Good luck getting yours straightened out.I know they can be a pain to figure out sometimes.

Availability is a bit of a problem here in Canada.
The only tool I can get in this area is an Actron unit. More than I want to spend, but paying the General 50 bucks at time to check it out is to much. Thanks for the input.

the actron Scan Tool works good but a OBDII code reader would be just as good and much cheaper www.JCwhitney.com sells them and about $179.99 part# 81RJ7745N and will work and 1996 and newer cars and trucks per jcwhitney

If you have a GM factory code book, see if there is directions for using an analog meter to plug into your computer pigtail. I had the same problem as you, only it was a Ford. The Ford factory book I had gave directions for using an analog meter, how to plug it in, run the test, and decifer the code as to what was wrong with the engine by counting how many times the needle on the meter bounces. It was also an O2 sensor, amongst numerous other things. Worked well, and only cost $12 for a cheap Radio Shack meter, and 1 minute for the computer to run its test.

Can't help with the scanner. On my '88 Chevy, you could stick a little 2 prong blade in the plug and the "check engine light" would flash so many times for the problem. Don't know if the '98 is like that or not, but I need to find out, because that's what I have now.

Just for info. My '88 code kept saying O2 sensor. It was finally fixed with an EGR valve.
