OT Refrigerator stopped working

When I woke up this morning my apple cider was not as cold as it should have been. The interior light is still working so I know it is getting power. I pulled the unit away from the wall to clean since we have 4 dogs. It didn't seem too dirty. Now the fan started running so I plan to leave it alone for a couple of hours. I thought maybe a stuck relay may be the problem and moving the fridge out "unstuck" it. Any other suggestions on what to look for if it does not start to cool inside the box? Any ideas would be appreciated

Buy a cleaner (looks like a big bottle washer) at HD or Lowe's etc. Some have a vacuum attachment and clean the condenser. Looks like a metal fence on back or series of bent fence wire underneath. When they get covered with hair or dust the fridge fails.

our whirlpool quit after about a year and a half of running, was bought new, had a relay on the side of the compressor that went bad, cost over a hundred dollars to have a service man come out and fix, relay was made in mexico, he replaced it with one made in usa, haven't had any trouble since, everything else was runnning, just not the compressor.

I recently replaced my house fridge. The shop one (which had been my parents fridge, a 1979 Fridgeair) finally died and So I moved the house one (a 1985 Kenmore) out to the shop, Bought a new Whirlpool Gold from the clearance line at Lowes. Lowes delivered and took the old one for free. Plugged it in and several hours later, the freezer was cool, the fridge not. Turns out after removing the icemaker and rear panel of the freezer (about 5 screws alltogether) that the fan in the back of the freezer was not running. Gave it a twirl with my finger and it started running and has ever since. Cooled down in a couple of hours.

Odd part is the house electric bill has gone down ten or fifteen dollars and the shop bill went up like amount. Guess I need to replace the old Kenmore, didn't realize it was "eating me out of house and home" electric wise. Been a good one, only part I ever replaced was the condenser fan underneath.

we have a maytag 27 ft for 5-6 yrs no trouble. got up 3 days ago darn ref not working freezer O.K. turns out,just needs cleaned out,the passage between freezer and refrig blocked by ice.and its frost free,thawed out,OK now. Bob God Bless

Hi Jim,

I would say that 70% of my domestic refer calls were clean out the condensor fan and coils. Them women would really give me a nasty look when they just shelled out $100 for a little cleaning problem.

I have a 1yr old GE sXs with ice maker I'll give you. Cost me $1600 only to have my 200a main kick because of a brown out the day after we left for 2wks vacation. $800 for the first one and $800 for the second one. What insurance? We don't need no stinking insurance...LMAO

Them fish magots were all over the floor!

Jim, This is just the wife's way of saying lets get a new fridge. I don't know what the women do to these appliances but in the last year I have a new fridge and stove because I lost. Hope you can hold out longer than I did.

JML, sounds like my wife. Our washer started making a weird sound. I called a repairman. He took it apart and found a toothpick stuck in the pump impeller. I never stick toothpicks in my pocket. My wife does.

Is it a freezer above/fridge below version? If so, make sure the ports between the freezer and fridge are open. They can ice up preventing the cold air from drifting into the fridge from above. If they are iced up, you'll hafta thaw out and unplug the drain line. I hope it's an easy fix for you.

Once saw a refregerator store advertise that a good cleaning of refrigeration unit (fan, etc) twice a year will help eliminate a lot of repair calls. Have a GE refridgerator that has given good service since new with this schedule of cleaning. No repairs yet. Stan.

you sound like my wife. third party image. Just last week, I came home and she said the washing machine stopped draining and was making a funny noise. She wanted to call the repairman (it's a 4 yr old front loader, not cheap), but I said hold on. After listening to the grinding noise I took off the lower front panel, found a "cleanout" in the drain line right up front, opened it and found a semi-circular wire piece jamming the drain pump impeller. (I was impressed by the machine design, they actually thought of this). Showing it to my wife, I asked her if any of the women in the house were missing a support wire from one of their bras? third party image

So, I buttoned it back up and it worked fine. The bad thing is that I tried to show her and my daughter where the cleanout was and how to clear it. Neither one was interested in even looking down there. I asked what they would do if I was dead and gone? Wife said she could afford to call a repairman then and there'd be no one to stop her! third party image

I second the defrost timer. I used to sell used refrigerators and this was the most common cause of failure.

In addition to what Bob said, the defrost timer is sometimes located in the rear of the unit, near the bottom. There will sometimes be a hole in the back case where you can stick a screwdriver in and manually advance the timer. If so, you can often "fix" the unit by just advancing to the next "click", and then seeing if the unit works properly thereafter. I had an old GE unit that needed this done to it every few months, and worked perfectly otherwise until I finally replaced the entire fridge.

Usually behind the kick panel in front. Look for something that's about the size of a wall timer. For more specific help by model go to the "Repair Clinc"

They will give you all the help you need to do this yourself.

It may be possible to manually trip the timer. Varies by model though.

The defrost timer has a synchronous motor that drives a plastic cam which opens and closes a contact. If the contact becomes encrusted with burnt metal oxide from multiple closings and openings it builds resistance and then it heats up and when it heats up it melts into the plastic cam. Once it malfunctions it should just be replaced.

check the defrost timer, it controls the defrosting time and shuts the compresser off while while defrosting. If it hangs up the compressor won"t come back on. About a $30.00 item.

Get in truck, go to Home Despot, buy new one, take home, pitch out old one, set new one in that space, transfer cold food to new one, plug in, all problems solved!
