Since June, I have been recovering heating oil (off-road non taxed diesel) from unused domestic heating oil tanks. I have done about 20 tanks and average about 100 gallons each. Lots of people are converting to natural gas and propane.

I have been using a Tuthill (Filrite) 12V fuel pump. Results have been good but tank sludge has always been a problem. On top of that, a lot of care has to be taken not to spill fuel from the hose when packing up. The process also requires that I have a battery, suction hose for the pump, and a bucket to capture the residual fuel in the discharge hose.

I would like to use a 300 gallon pressure vessel (which I have) and a vacuum pump. With this setup, I would just need a vacuum hose. I think 1" PEX would work. It will automatically clear itself when the tank is empty.

Could I use the vacuum pump from my Dodge/Cummins to evacuate the pressure vessel while traveling to the tank job? If not, what would be a good 12V vacuum pump. My lift seldom exceeds 15 ft and fuel is considerably lighter than water which has a theoretical lift limit of 33 feet.

I knew a guy that had a water pumping truck

that used engine vacuum to suck up the water.

He just parked the truck and dropped the suction hose in the water

and opened a valve. He timed it to know when it was full.

I would have created some kind of indicator to know when it was full.

I found a TDH (Total Dynamic Head) calculator and the specific gravity of fuel oil. Using a flow of 10 gals of fuel oil (SpG=.89) per minute running through 50 feet of 1" plastic tube with a height differential of 15 feet, the head is 18.4 feet.

One inch of vacuum is roughly equal to lifting one foot of water. So it appears that I need a vacuum pump that can develop a guage reading of 18 inches of mercury.

At this point, I need to figure out the CFM and HP of the pump running at 18" hg. The vacuum energy can be stored like compressed air but I think it will have to run while transferring fuel to maintain enough vacuum. This is likely to be true even if I could find a pump that could develop 30" hg. Can anyone help on sizing the pump?

Look at a Masport or Challenger brand either of these can get 30in on the bigger ones. They are used on 130 barrel vacuum trailers for hauling saltwater out of the oilfiled.

Thanks for the link.

Masport has a vane pump that will develop 27" Hg. It has a magnetic clutch and 8 groove flat belt similar to what is used on automotive AC compressors. It will probably fit on my Cummins. Heck, they might even have a mounting kit. CFMs are about 5 and HP seems adequate at 2. I think I am on to something and will call them tomorrow.

I have some concerns about oil vapor entering the pump. While it would help with lubrication, it might also be an explosion hazard. The factory should know.

I got another 300 gallons this weekend. And I thought the abandoned fuel tank situation would be on hold for the winter.

i wouldnt use the vac pump on the truck, they are pretty tough, but they are pretty pricey also.
I would try northern tools or just look on the web.
But im sure youll get alot of good answers here as well, i always do.

you just could use a old gas powered air compresser ,hook the intake side where the air fliter screws into to the tank to create vacaum .just make sure you have a check ball so you do not suck fuel into compresser .and this way you could suck lines dry .
