I would like to buy a semi-auto rifle .223 caliber. Which is the best for quality/cost? Bushmaster Armalite Stag-arms Panther arms Barrett rifles I know I can get an Armalite M15 carbine for about $970--or so. FFL dealer in my area gave me a price on it. Gimmie some opinions here. I want the rifle for target shooting, and because I just want one. (to pi$$ off liberals who think I shouldnt own one)

I've been very pleased with the Ruger Mini 14. I have several mags for it, one being a RamLine 30 round see through mag. It looks mean to view from the front. If you have the property and distance, I would also suggest a 30-06. It will turn varments inside out and has alot of potential for hunting in many states. 2 good calibers that should be in the safe.

With all the talk of AR15s and .223 caliber on here, I'm wondering if ammo is confusing to buy because of the change in barrel-twist and powders that the military has done in the last couple of years for their 223. Has it affected civilian shooters?

Acctually the use of the AR15 in service rifle shooting has helped civilians a lot. Competive ARs sell for less then $1000 where as a Super Match M1A goes over $2500. Now civilians can compete against service teams who have military funding.

Bullets arnt hard to figure out, for up to 55 grns the 223 gets buy fine with 1 in 12 twist. 62-77 require a 1-8or9. Heavy 80 and 90 grn pills require 1 in 7. Sierra list the twist recomdatins on thier Match King bullets.

Yes, I know you need to match up the correct twist with some of those heavier rounds. I think there is a 70 grain bullet now.

i'd recommend the Bushmaster.

Personally I love my M1 Garand.
Most fun to shoot i'd have to say the SKS with a 40 round clip, cheap ammo and you can cut firewood with it.
For Most destructive, i'd say the Egyptian Hakiem, semi-auto 8mm mauser.

I too only had 3 guns before the "Clinton" whitehouse. I didn't want to dissapoint any body when they came to get my guns, so i had to go buy some more. Currently 42 in the house at last count....

42 guns..... Holy cow. Make sure that the home owners insurance covers all of them in case you are ripped off. Unless of course you never leave the house and have a loaded gun ready for the neighborhood thief.

Been to the local Judge twice now, last time about 3 years ago, been deemed legal in the eyes of the law both times.
Every one in the county knows what will happen if i catch them... also have a backhoe and 25 acres..

I have been told that if you want to bury guns, use PVC pipe sealed up. A whack job guy that I used to work with almost did this during the Clinton gun ban of the mid 90's

He was stating that everyone in the county knows what would happen to them if he found out they stole guns from him. I don't think it was his guns he was talking about burying.

Taking this conversation at face value, talking about what you might do to someone can serve the purpose of making them steer clear of you. If, on the other hand, you might actually do the thing you threaten, it's generally better not to have made your intention a matter of record.

Yep, I know what you mean. A conversation popped up where I used to work and the comment was made "what would you do if somebody broke into your house" I said, well I would shoot them. This one lady from the inner city who worked there said "oh my-oh my, how could you do that, that isnt right bla, bla, bla" I said to her, not only would I shoot them but I would shoot twice to make sure they were dead. She gave me a look of horror. A michigan state cop told me (former neighbor) that you can shoot anybody that breaks into your home, just make sure that they cant tell their side of the story when its over. And dont shoot them while they are on the front porch, they have to be IN the house.

Believe it or not (and I'll bet you actually have no trouble believing it) there are states in this country where you DON'T have the right to shoot someone who breaks into your house unless you are defending your life exactly as you would have the right to do in a public place---no more, no less. So, in one of those states, you don't have to worry about whether the shooting takes place in your house, but you do have to figure out a way to dispose of the body. Now, that's just not right.

I've been a highpower shooter for about 30 years, mostly M1A and M14s (Shot for the AK NG Rifle team. I love the M14/M1a but I'm a realist. ARs are the way to go for target shooting. I hav a Colt AR SP1, fine for plinking but I got a White Oak Upper 1-7 Service rifle upper. There are other good ones out there but in my opinion, this is the best I've for found for my needs. ARs are beating the records set by the M14s at 600 and 1000 yards.

I had no idea that the Rem. 223 (that is what we're talking about here, right?) was capable of .308 Win. beating accuracy at 600 yds, much less 1,000. I'd have thought that at that distance, even an amount of wind that would hardly move cigarette smoke would affect that light bullet---more than it affects the .308, anyway. Live and learn, I guess.

Its not so much about the weight. Its more the relationship of the diameter and lenth of the bullet.

Those little 80 SMKs they use in the 223 hold up pretty good at long ranges, and bucking the wind.

I have a Bushmaster carbine and have been real happy with it. I teach the Concealed Pistol liscening course in my area and one of students had a FFL and sold it to me for in the high 800s. I think the Bushmaster is higher quality then most of the .223 AR type rifles, it is most definitley a better gun then the Ruger mini 14's. You just need to buy a good receiver then you can go the gun shows and buy all sorts of uppers and barrels and grips. YOu can change in a matter of seconds from a carbine barrel to a large bull barrel for long range shooting, the other .223s like the mini-14s can't do that. And you know, this is gun show season in Michigan, there is one somewhere every weekend now.

I'm not a fan of the AR-15 and own an M-14 myself. However, among the AR fans, Rock River Arms seems to be highly regarded.

The M 16 in my experience was a nice target shooter, but the M 14 would closed the deal and a sweet shooter. If I wanted to stay in that cal. try a 222 Rem. to punch paper in a bolt action. Smmmmmooth pull is a must with paper shooting.

I've never shot a 223...But I do have a Ruger 10-22 with rotary and banana clips with speed loader..In 20 years , it has misfired once..Due to a dud bullet..

If nothing else get the pillar bedded stock and the trigger job. I'd really consider the recoil spring & the adjustable gas port mod as well.
I'd purchase a Armalite or clone before spending any more on the Ruger mini14.

fulton armory.com puts together a good ar15 and stands good on their work, if not them id buy a colt.the ruger mini 14 has terrible sights compared to the ar15.i used to build ar15's with bushmaster parts kits and their parts were very good,they worked.about the only parts kits that did work in the 80's and 90's. oh well ,im partial to the m1a(m14) rifle for target work,but its .308 calibre.they do make a pistol grip stock for it. good luck, lucas

Hi M r,

What kind of target shooting are you talking about, competition or informal? If you're talking about informal shooting, I'd go along with buickanddeere that you should consider the Ruger Mini-14. It's got Ruger quality and service behind it, and there's practically a whole industry based on add-ons and upgrades for that model. I also like that it is similar in appearance to the M-14, though smaller, of course. I thought the M-14 was among the best of all the .30 caliber weapons ever used by the U.S. military. If your taste runs to the futuristic rather than the traditional, you'd probably not be interested in it for the same reason that it appeals to me so much.

P.S. I am quite liberal in many of my beliefs, but gun ownership is one issue that liberals have got 100% wrong. It's one of those articles of faith that they simply "know the truth" about. I know enough to not bother arguing with anybody who "knows the truth" about anything. It's like when someone tells you they talk to Elvis, there's just nothing you can say about it.

Informal shooting is what I will be doing a couple of times a year at a range. I want a semiauto rifle that has a pistol grip instead of a regular rifle because the rifle is easier to hold and fire. (I wont have to have my arm sticking out while holding the rifle.) P.S. I saw a bumper sticker a few years ago that said, "buy a gun-pi$$ off a liberal"

Well, this would be going about it the hard way, but years ago I saw an ad in Shotgun News for a company that sold accessories to trick out Mini-14's (and maybe other popular long guns, too, but I don't remember.) The coolest setup, in my opinion, was the kit that made the rifle look exactly like a WWII German MG-42 machine gun---which has a pistol grip, by the way.

The members of a local gun rights group sometimes go to anti-gun rallies and try to give away signs for people to take home and put in their windows saying, "There is no gun in this house." The interesting part is listening to anti-gun people explain why they won't do that.

Bushmaster or Barrett are the better of the list. Do you plan on a heavy barrel? Much Better for targets but increases the weight quite a bit. I'd go with Barrett just because he had the guts to tell Calif law enforcement to pack sand after they LIED about the .50 cal issues. He now refuses to sell or service any products to a bunch of Calif LE departments.

Ruger is good except you have to fully bed the barrel into the stock if you want better than 3" groups at 100yrds. Remington is releasing a .223 Armalite copy in 2008.

I also have a Ruger 77 and thought it was just me. I seemed to hit within an inch at 100 yards then for no reason I would get a flyer about 3 inches out. The trigger action is real stiff.

You said the magic words;"stiff trigger". If the trigger doesn't break crisp clean without creep and with very short travel. Nobody and I mean nobody can shoot decent with a crummy trigger. There are aftermarket triggers that will drop right into that Ruger. 2 lb pull is good. A trigger should break like the tip off a small icicle. Without any perceptible feeling of movement or warning before it snaps clean.
