Any recommendations for a gun for a lefty? I have shot Remington 870 and dislike the crossbolt safety. I have heard that the Mossberg has a forward rear thumb operated safety on the model 500. That seems more natural to me. Can't justify a lot of money. The shell ejection path is also a concern as I shot a Ruger Mark 1?, and kept getting hit in the face with the hot empties. Finding a left handed used gun is probably unlikely.

Ithaca Model 37.Bought a nice one for 180.00 a few years ago.Vent rib, fancy wood.A nice double would be fine also.Got a wild turkey with my stevens 94 single shot that cost 30.00 back in the sixties.My son in law has a Mossberg.Dont care for it.

Ithaca 37 is by far in my opinion the best gun ever produced. It can be used by left @right handed people and it is built like a tank. You could get a nice used one for about $300.

I am a lefty and have hunted off and on all my life. I was not aware that there was a difference in guns for lefties. No wonder I can't hit the broad side of a barn with my Mossberg 12 gauge pump (LOL) only knocked down 3 pheasant and a bunch of quail last season. Someone needs to let the Arm Forces know this, in all my 20 yrs I was never issued a different M-16 because I was a lefty.

Ithica Model 37 is the only way to go. Bottom load and eject.

I agree with the Ithica 37. My dad was left handed and loved his. I still have it. He had the safety reversed also. I left it that way and he was gone. I dont think it is to hard to change the safety.

I have a left hand muzzleloader.I have been thinking of selling. I bought it for the ex way back when. I tried shooting it righthanded once, big mistake as the blast from the cap went right in my face. It doesn"t happen shooting it left handed. It is a CVA 50 cal hawken with lots of brass, set triggers and has only had 6 balls ran through. Very nice condition!

I shoot from the left also and use a Browning BPS. I have had it for about 20 years and I like it. At the time I bought it I thought it was the best choice for the money.

The only drawback for me was when I bought a slug barrel for it the only barrel I could find was a smooth bore. I would have rather had a rifled barrel. At that time I don't believe Hastings or anyone else had one available. That has been a long time ago and things may have changed by now.

500A Mossberg is worth checking out,not sure of all the variations, friend has this crazy looking tactical, recent purchase, the end is sawtooth shaped, looks wild, but it's based on the 500A, you know in case you need to bash down a door in the middle of the night LOL. He's a lefty though, seems to work for him.

I never owned a shotgun until say 10 or so years ago, used to borrow a real nice double with the stacked barrels, really nice shooter, same friend brought over a basket case of a well worn 500A, missing a barrel, and parts from the trigger assembly to me to see what I could do with it. So I took an exploded view from the Gun Parts catalog, magnified it, figured out what it was missing, put it back together with only one hitch, the goal post shaped part needed to be shortened to allow the safety to work, found a another 500A with extra barrel at a gunshow for like $150, completed his and had one of my own, have shot plenty of others, but the 500A sure seems to be an inexpensive one to own and I do like the safety and the action on it, only thing I can't figure out is how to block up the magazine tube to only hold 3 shots for waterfowl hunting, I use wooden dowels sectioned off same size as shells, which probably bends the rules a bit.

Billy: The plug that came with my Mossberg is just a smallish wooden dowel with a couple of o-rings on it. It fits in the end of the magazine--unscrew the knurled bolt that holds on the barrel, insert the dowel in the hole in the end of the magazine, and reattach the barrel. I'm left-handed but right-eyed, and shoot rifles and shotguns right-handed. I shoot pistols left-handed, as (unlike a shoulder-fired gun) it's easy to use the left hand and right eye, and I'm more comfortable gripping the pistol with my strong hand. I have two Mossberg 500's, (12 and 20) and would recommend them to anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive, decently-made shotgun.

I'll have to take a look at it again, I have removed the barrel, and unlike my friends old springfield, the tube magazine stays put, no access, meaning I could not figure out how you can block it up from behind the plunger, like he did on his. Completely missed that one LOL !

Same hole as the bolt screws into, dowel must be like 1/4" diameter, yep, I kind of missed that one for sure, that would certainly do it, and if the waterfowl police check us out, it ought to suffice.

The 500's are a workhorse, from what I saw of that basket case worn out one I put back together, and the one I have, although I thoroughly enjoyed that double over I used to shoot, seemed to fit well.

I am also a lefty, and know the pain of getting hot empties in my face... I shoot a browning bps and id say thats one of the best choices, because it combines bottom ejection and a top mounted saftey. It also has MUCH better fit and finish tan any of the mossbergs. Another great one for a lefty is a Stoeger over and under or sxs. They make a great double gun for not much money. I shoot 2 of them and my brother shoots 2 also

The Mossberg has the best safety if it works. I had not heard of it's failing till now. The overall lightweight aluminum manufacture is great to carry and is strong. However the recoil from firing 3" loads forced a switch to a Browning Gold. Everything is great except it's like lugging a 30" length of city water main pipe through the forest/woods/bush. The wife writes right handed but is a strong left eye dominate. Then again she dominates me around here but that's another story. For her guns that I can use. We went with a Remington 7400 semi .270 for deer & coyote.And a 3-1/2 Baikal semi, the identical item Remington sells as the Link The 11-87 works great as a 3" model but the 11-87 3-1/2 chamber units are jammers.

Check the used sections of your local gun shops, gun shows if your state has them also, mini-merchant type papers. I found a left handed remington 1100 at a gun show 4-5 years ago for about $300 if I remember right.It has been a great gun. I used to shoot alot of trap with an 870 remington, one trick is to turn the gun so that the ejector is facing toward the ground as you eject the shell. Never had one hit me in the face. That old wingmaster is still the best shotgun in my cabinet although I use the 1100lh and the over-under much more these days. Good luck and be safe with whatever you decide on. Mike

Ithaca Model 37, ejects for the bottom. Had it for about thirty years and it's still a great gun. Reasonably priced, easy to find used. Been in production since 1937 so they must have done something right.

I'm a lefty too. I have a Mossberg 500 and even though they are a cheap gun they are well made and trouble free. And yes the saftey is on the tang where all guns should have them ! I think they also have the best loading port design as there is no flipper to depress you won't end up with all the shells flying out like on an 870 or model 12.

Be careful of that Mossberg safety. Years ago a student of mine lost a couple of fingers in a duck-blind accident. They brought the gun to me to examine, and yes, the gun would fire with the safety on. It was a little loose in its mounting.

An Ithica pump ejects downwards, though my Dad's late 40's model will fire when you pump it if you hold the trigger back. Remington 870's are safer.

If you can afford it, go with an over and under.

Consider a Browning BPS (bottom pump shotgun).

My brother technilly owns one but it lives with me. (He lives in the big city and is married and I am single and live in the country thus it living with me) I have use rights also.

This one ejects the shells out the bottom, same hole that they are inserted.

I have shot a couple rounds of trap with it and did as well as with any other.

Just a thought.

I'm a lefty too and once reversed the cross bolt safety.It was awkward to use and found myself constantly visually checking it to see if it was on "Safe"or "Fire",and soon switched it back.I also worried that someone else might be fooled by the reversed safety and have an accident with the gun.Of course anyone depending on a mechanical safety doesn't know jack about proper gun handling.I've used right handed guns my whole left handed life with no problems.The 870 is my favorite shotgun,smoothest operating,best pointing repeating shotgun that I know of.

Dad gave left hand Teddy a choice, use his 250-3000 Savage or buy his own rifle. Teddy worked at it a little and ended up a better shot right handed than me!

Ithica Model 37 featherweight pump. It has bottom ejection. It has a changable safety that you buy and install. I changed mine from left hand to right hand by ordering the small part. Tom

Mossberg might be a good choice as I think they eject from the bottom of the receiver. You might check some pawn shops in your area and you could come up with a rather inexpensive shotgun.

Mossberg 500 has a forward sliding safety at rear of receiver, ejection is to right and forward.
