Growling noise from microwave turntable

I have a Magic Chef microwave. It seems like I've had it for a couple of years, so that usually means five. Recently I noticed that there's a growling gear noise from the carrousel which I can only hear when it first comes on, before the fan gets up to speed. After that, the fan noise masks it. A quick look at the bottom of the unit didn't encourage me too much about getting at it from there. Warnings about capacitors in microwaves make me not eager to start tearing the whole thing apart.

Microwave ovens don't cost much, so one strategy would be to ignore the noise and use it until it stops working. I'd be okay with that except that the fan motor on my furnace is squeaking, the drum motor on my clothes dryer is squeaking, and I'm starting to feel like my machines are getting away from me. I would appreciate advice on how to deal with the microwave (or the other squeaks, for that matter.)

Thanks, Stan

I'm with fergus and some of the others. The small ger reduction motor on the microwave turntable really doesn't have any user serviceable parts inside. Use it till it dies, then just manually flip your food around every minute or so like the old microwaves with no turn table.. or drop 89$ at walmart and get another one.

I've had an old whiner like that, for years and years. It was my grandmothers, i eventually got used to that sound, and just thinking of the whining while we're cooking brings back some sweet memories!

I'd recommend getting some oil on the furnace blower motor bearings quick before you have to buy a new motor or it freezes up in the middle of a cold dark night. Mine was not made to be oiled but as soon as it started squeaking I pried off the end caps and put some SAE 20 oil on the felt washers and it's been working for another year.

Stan,
Your microwave carousel probably has a 'dinky' little toy-like motor with plastic gears and you likely couldn't do much about the noise if you did get into it. There IS a nasty high voltage inside - you'd rather 'wet' on an electric fence than get hit with the charge that might on that HV capacitor, even if it has been turned off for days, or months! And, if you should energize that unit without all the shields in their proper places, that frying sound could be your own personal bacon.

I'd let the thing whine away, and if it does eventually quit (probably won't), you can always just buy a new unit, as you said.
You did look under the glass platter for stray hunks of food, kid's toys, or other foriegn materials?

Don't stress over the dryer. You can probably have that drum out in about 5 minutes by taking the top off, then the drum should just lift out. The rollers/glides should be easy and cheap to replace. Google the make/model ahead of time and you can probably locate a parts source online. While you are in there be sure to vacuum the lint out - it gets everywhere and causes more fires than you might imagine.

Wear and tear on them and causing noise is normal. Usually there is nothing you can do in the case of the microwave.Don't take the cover off and go probing around cause you can get into the high voltage "2,000 volts + dc" and it "WILL LIGHT YOU UP"..... .....

In most cases, those are self contained little gear reduction motors, no fix, replace only. Don"t bother till it stops. Make sure it"s not just something in the little roller ring that carrys the plate. In your dryer, many of them carry the front of the drum on two little vinyl slide pads that often wear through.

AS for the furnace motor you are suppose to put 2-3 drops of light oil in the oil tube which has a spring loaded cap on it, some have two tubes. DON'T use more oil as you could have a messes problem.
