I just checked today what the price of a lbs of the stuff would cost. I was glad I was sitting down. $33 for a 1 lbs box of the rod. I like to keep some on hand but for that price I don't know if I will be able to any more

I just bought a small box of 1/8" rod at TSC to weld up broken gearbox casting on my hay tedder. It was about $10 for 12-15 pcs. This was probably 1/4 lb or less and it was the cheaper stuff.

Nickle is actually on the downward side right now. Not too long ago it was up in the mid $20's for raw alloy. I work at an aerospace foundry and most of the high-temperature alloys are nickle based.

We have one job here that we just got a metal shipment in and we paid $30,000 for 2,000 lbs of melting stock. This isn't a real high end alloy (N-155). We pour 68lbs to yield 16lbs of parts. The spec won't let us re-melt any of the alloy again and when we sell off the scrap we get less than 50% of the original price. This results in a metal cost of $656.00 every time we pour. We sell these parts for almost $1700.00 but there's not much margin at that.

Just whining I guess.

Ebay,Just got a 10 lb can of 308 for 30.00 delivered last night there.I use stainless on many jobs.It has a softer arc and flows out better.I first used stainless to weld new exhaust tubing over 40 years ago.
