Thanks for looking. I know we have done this before but, I am once again looking at Hughsnet for broadband service. I live were cable or phoneline service is not available. Anyone using these guys or have any good alternatives. Sick of waiting....Scottyb

I've been on Wi-Fi for a number of years now with overall good experience. There is an outfit out of Nebraska called Speednet and small regional companies in various places. Speednet tends to mount their antennas on grain elevators. You have to be in clear line of sight and mount an FM antenna on your house. They have about a 5-7mi range. Not the prettiest thing in the world but works well. It's not cheap, mine is $75/mo but with no other high speed choices and working out of the house you just pony up.

I had the exact same issue... waiting for ATT. I went w/ Wildblue. They had a cheaper package, etc. I have had it for about 3 months. I would do it again. Only had one instance where their servers were unobtainable during a storm...other than that, it beats dialup hands down... cant believe I waited so long to do it!

I believe Hughsnet used to be Direcway, provided by DirectTV. You might want to do an internet search on them. One of my brothers had them last year, terrible service, down a lot of the time. He got rid of them after a couple of months. I suspect that they changed the name because of the terrible reputation that they had.

A friend in central Wisconsin has HughesNet and likes it alot. While close to built up areas, the phone company won't run DSL and no cable either. They needed it as they have a home business making signs, laser engraved items, and such, and needed good communication with their customers.

They do get occasional interruptions from rain/thunderstorms that get in the line of sight of the antenna to satellite, but usually momentary.

I have a sprint broadband card and love it, they will be coming out with even faster stuff next year called WiMax. I would recommend the USB version so you can stick it up in your window and use it on a desktop or laptop for connectivity as well. its about 60 bucks a month for unlimited use. not fast enough for radical gaming but much much better than dialup. I get really good speeds.
