Rat traps

This morning when my wife got up, a rat ran in front of her and out the dog door. In the past I've had poor results with regular rat traps. I'm squeamish about putting them on counters or other raised surfaces because the outcome is sometimes a bloody mess. On the floor I have to put them under boxes with openings too small for the dogs. The rats seem to avoid the setup entirely. Any advice?

Stan, you may want to block off the dog door, it could be how they're getting in.

Very safe way to do this, Get a box of Mothers rolled oats and put some on a lid or whatever, then put an apple or potato very close to it, they will eat the oats then go for the apple or potato for moisture as the oats are very dry. A mouse or rat can't throw up like other animals so they get bound up and can't pass it, because it has swelled them up really bad. Dead mouse or rat.

Not much help with rats but I bought a couple of metal traps called "Tin Cat" from Menards. It has a little ramp door thingy on each end. I put a little peanut butter inside to attract them. I've had as many as five at a time inside the thing overnight. Each morning I take the mice in the trap on a swimming trip in the pond, then add alittle more peanut butter to the trap and dream of how many of the furry little vermin I will get to take swimming the next day.

Have been trapping mice in the garage ( and in the kitchen when we first moved in) and Norweigan rats in the barn. Good old fashion spring traps baited with peanut butter gets them each time. They have to stay awhile and lick the bait off. Put some decon in the engine compartment (where rats where eating wires) and about 6 mos later the dog was eating it. Don't exactly know how she got it but lickily we saw her and had her stomach pumped for she died. Also poisoned rodents are tempting and toxic for your stupid pets.

Hi Scotty,

Do you reuse the spring traps after they have killed whichever rodent they are intended for? Gary noted that you have to clean out a garbage can or bucket after a rat or mouse has been trapped in it. Two years ago I killed a rat with a spring trap. Afterwards, I cleaned it and poured boiling water over it before putting it away. Last year I didn't have any luck when I put out that trap and several others. It made me wonder whether there might have been a lingering scent on it warning rats what it was there for.

I remember my Dad always burning a match under an upside-down mousetrap. I think after baiting and setting them. That was supposed to mask the scent of the previously caught mouse. Always seemed to catch mice. Maybe there was something to it.

I don't know about rats, but I have had many mice on a trap that "got messy".

I want to thank those of you who offered good advice. To the rest of you---feel better now? I did get a few good laughs out of some of the suggestions, though.

It's not actually as rustic here as some of you seem to think. We have indoor plumbing, electricity, even radio reception. If I lived in the kind of house where I could fire a shotgun indoors, I wouldn't have a rat or mouse problem. I'd just name them and consider them auxillary pets.

I really can't say I've ever seen a RAT here in WV. Seoul, Korea was another story. Anyway, I have a sister in Cedar Falls, Iowa who claims to have eliminated 31 (thirty-one) at last count, chipmunks, using Rat traps. And I know I've never seem 31 chipmunks. she got 12 in the first 24 hours. They were taking over all the flower beds in her well-groomed, landscaped yard. She is in an area where fire-cracker sounds would be easily noted, and her dog is a Yorkie wuss.

Try a steel trash can! Cut a 2"-3" hole in a plywood top. Weight the top with a cinder block. Toss in a hand full or two of grain. The rats jump in to get the grain and can't jump out. You have to put it in a corner where they can climb onto the top or lean a 2X4 against the side so they can climb up. Works with a 5 gal bucket and a one inch hole for mice. Clean cans thoroughly before next use, they leave the scent of danger and death.

Hi Stan,

Man for what I went thru this past summer, some kid had to turn loose some pet mice as we had white, black/tan mice up the yang yang.

Of course I had left off a access cover that didn't help.

After trapping 80 mice, what a PITA, we changed to decon. Decon is the far better way to handle the problem as we had them under control is less than a week. Believe it or not, alot of mice came out in the open to finish dieing so they were easy picked-up for disposal.

Don't fight where the rodents run and set the bait/trap there. Rodents will not go out of there runway for bait or traps. They leave a scent trail just like any other animal.

Hey T-Bone, How long ago did you use the DCON? Have you started smelling "road kill" yet? Have you started to have ALOT of flies? Its the mice that didn't come out in the open to die. Its the downside to DCON. BTDT and then they die in my T-shirt(big grin). Regards.....don t. .....

Hi don,

I have to agree that using decon is more of a overall mess than traps. I think my major problem is while trying to trap them, I gave them enough time to reproduce, and that is the huge differnce of why I think decon is more effective. With decon use at first out break, I would not be fighting the problem for 2mths and then still have to resort to using decon.

One or two, I can see the use of traps but my problem is I had such a huge wave of visitors in 3days and there's just no way traps would get them all before they had a chance to reproduce.

We've lived here for over 20yrs and never had a rodent problem in past years, so that's why I think some kid let a bunch of pets loose at one time and we were the lucky new "home" for them. lol

We've got a Lab and a Dalmation. Both will kill any small animal that sets foot in THIER yard. Cats, woodchucks, rabbits, squirrels, chipmonks, rats, mice, they aren't fussy. The Lab will kill them and then sit near by waiting for it to move again. The Dalmation thinks rats and mice are doggy treats, and will eat them as if they were candy.

Get 'em before they get it. I use a PVC trap, homemade, with excellent results. Start with a PVC tee, install 20" long PVC piece in each straight direction. Install a 4" piece in the "Tee" direction. Slide an endcap on the 4" side and stake to the ground. Fill with rat poison and peanut butter mix. The rats and mice will get in and eat, but the dogs and cats can't get to it. I use 2" PVC. Hope it helps.

I find spring loaded box traps to be the greatest thing for mice. I don't know if they make them big enough for rats though. Can you leave a lower cabnet door ajar and block it so dog can't get in, and place trap inside cabnet. The only other I can think of are the Pied Piper or carry a 410 shotgun around
