Shop Electrical Problem Solved

Probably 3-4 weeks ago I posted regarding a problem with the 100amp Square D breaker box in my shop. If you'll remember I was having trouble with at least one slot in that half of my lights would go out unpredictably. I could usually restore the lights by pushing hard on the breaker. The problem continued to worsen till my lights seldom worked. Knowing something was obviously wrong I would turn the main breaker off upon leaving the shop for the day (night). Recently I did some checking and found the main breaker to be getting a poor contact on the left side. Thus, half of my slots were effected. However, my 220's continued to work as they draw heavy power and "forced" the main breaker to contact. The other "problem slots" happened to be on seldom used circuts so they were not readily observed. ANYWAY, one day I got serious about finding the problem and traced it down. When I removed the main breaker (not real easily done), my problem (fire hazard) was obvious. I have since replaced the 37 year old breaker box with a new 200 amp Square D, 30 slot unit. Now all is well. Thank you for your input/suggestions in the past. I'm curious how many of you have had/experienced such a failure.

Had a similar problem ,, 3 different buildings , , Never FLIPPED a breaker , But got to the point that it would not run electric drill,,TURNED OUTPROBLEM WAS ON OUTSIDE MAIN BREAKER POLE , ALL UNDER GROUND FROM THAT POINT ,it seems that the dry weather(CONTRACTION ) had pulled the wire out of BREAKER connector,, MORAL;;aLWAYS SNAKE ONDERGROUND WIRE AND EVEN WATER PIPES IN TRENCH TO ALLOW FOR DIRT MOVEMENT ,
