I have a 13 year old dachsund that has all the symptoms of cushings. knots in her neck, fat, insatiable appetite, small tumors on her head....sounds horrible but she is still beautiful to me and I love her. Someone told me melatonin will shrink the tumors and slow appetite down. Has anyone ever tried this with their dog? What else could I try?

Guess melatonin is safe for dogs. It is sold as sleep aid for humans. Take it often. Works most of time. Hope it helps.

I too have an older dog with Cushings. Effected animals produce too much steroids, hence the raging appetite. I got some special food from the vet that I can feed her smaller amounts 4 times a day without her being hungry all the time or blowing up like a ballon from eating too much. Take a picture and enjoy the time you have left!

Is it the same as in horses? We rescued a pony years ago that we were told had it. The thing we noticed with here was her hair didn't shed and got real long and matted. She live to an old age with nothing other than good care and several hair cuts a year and a hosing off when it was hot.

It's a crap-shoot as far as I can tell. Our 16 year-old dog had it. After reading up on it, and wasting a lot of money with several vets - I came to this conclusion. There is no certain evidence that any treatment will prolong your dog's life. It may, or may not relieve some symptoms - and might make him suffer more. One of the treatments is a DDT-like poison used in limited amounts to stop some hormone production - by destroying part of the adrenal gland. In our case - after wasting a lot of money, and getting some good and bad advice - we chose to let our dog live out the rest of his life without enduring chemotherapy. He lived two more happy years and died at home - and we're glad we did it that way. Here's a photo of him a month before he died - sitting in the snow enjoying the view - one of his favorite winter pass-times.

I absolutely agree with railhead. That picture is perfect, somehow. I keep going back to look at it again and again. What a wonderful way to remember your dog.

Thanks for sharing it with us, Stan

Yes, he was an important part of the family and grew up with my kids. He is now buried in the exact spot you see him sitting in the photo.

Hi railhead,

I'm really sorry about your little dog. We have an 11 year old who we have been watching for signs of Cushings for years because she was on Prednisone (cortisone) for so long. The only thing my wife could suggest is that if your baby is on any form of steroids, you see if you can get her off it and see if there's some other way to deal with that situation. I hope it turns out okay.

All the best, Stan

Well of course I get her yearly rabies and heart worm test/prevention meds at the vet. And she is on no other meds or steroids. The vet's opinion last time was "I see a lot of fat dachsunds" and "if the fatty tumors in her neck have been there a couple of years, they are probably not going to harm her". Sometimes talking to others and hearing their experience is more valuable than any money you could spend (on another vet). Thanks for your advice.

Hi again, railhead,

The brother of the dog I talked about earlier has fatty tumors on his sides and neck. I researched them online and was satisfied with the consensus opinion that they're so rarely malignant that it's not even worth putting the animal through the stress of a biopsy.

All the best, Stan
