Read the post on 220volt extention cord. Which got me to thinking, My little compressor is 15-20 yr old 115 volt, finally died and have been looking at some new compressors. my shop does not have 220 power, and no way to run 220 to it at this time. Even so I have been looking at the vertical compressors the 115 volt ones are not big enough. so I guess my question is can you run a 220 volt compressor off a generator. I have a 7000 watt generator and a welder/gen set. thanks for your thoughts Jerr

7K generator will not run the popular 220V/15A 3450 motor that a lot of today's compressors have. Even 12K starting watts is not enough to accelerate that motor through the initial high amp draw. It'll trip the thermal overload or melt the varnish on the auxilary windings. Don't ask me how I know, let's just say it's first hand experience. Can you put the compressor someplace else where you can get 220 and pipe the air into your shop?

Hmm, I do run my 120V 15 running amp compressor off of my 5500 W gen sometimes. It works fine.

Keep waiting for the little noisy sucker to die so I will get a big 220v one...

I'd look for gasoline powered compressor.

I can't run my compressor of my Yamaha 6400 generator. It's the start up it can't handle. It will not run a low horsepower drill press either. I have found that capacitor start motors don't work but induction type motoors are fine.
