Just thought I pass along this experience.

When I wired up my welder last spring, I bought my supplies from a local electrical supply house, which, to my suprise was much more economical than HomeCheapo. e.g., Home Cheapo had #2 and #4 wire, but not the #3 that was best suited for my application.

The local electrical dealer had #3 wire at less than half the cost of the #4 wire at HomeCheapo. Conduit, grounding rod were also substantially less expensive.

From now on, I'll always check with the electrical or plumbing supply houses when I have any volume of materials to buy.

Also, of course, the supply house had a bunch of stuff I needed (e.g., large junction box, flexible steel and rubber coated conduit) that HomeCheapo and Lowedown (appropriately) don't carry.

i also wired in a welder circuit. but first consulted an electrician on what to buy. i went and got the wire and breaker and never even talked to the floor guy at Lowe's. i try toavoid contact with the floor personell as much as possible because they usually don't know any more than i do.

As a house painter I can tell you that most paint you buy from Lowes is junk !
And their 'best' quality paint cost as much or more than I pay at Sherwin-Williams.

Don't even get me started on color matching !!!

Behr no better in reply to Chuck UR, 10-27-2007 04:36:58
We use to have a great dept. store (Spag's) that sold Sherwin-Williams, but they went out of business. Shortly after, my wife bought Behr latex to do my son's walls. After two coats, you could still see throught the paint and, the worse part, where I cut in along the ceiling was dripping to beat the band!

I brought the empty can back to HomeChepo, demanded my $$ and a free can of Glidden to finish the job.

I don't care what you are told or who paid Consumer Reports the money to say the Behr paint is so wonderful. I WILL NOT USE IT. I have had it 2 or three times and everytime I've used it it was terrible stuff. It does not go on well it drips it needs 2 or 3 coats to cover right. It has wicked off of spots (Fish eyes is I think the proper term)

I like the Valu Home Center Infinity house brand.
Killz from WallMart is another one I have used and liked. Behr? never again.

Last week I bought bolts from a Mom & Pop store because the bolts were "American-Made," Hillman in Ohio to be exact. That's why I bought from them in the first place. When I got home I found "China" on the back of the box. Hillman just boxed them. Insulted? You bet! I could have gotten the same junk for less at the big-box and not been lied to.

I despise whiners on this forum but today I AM ONE. Until WE QUIT buying from the mega stores and give the Mom and Pop stores as much business as possible this will continue. I know because corporate stores have WON and run virtually ALL the small guys out of business in Central Oklahoma where I live. Please take heed and support your local folks today.

I've been telling people about the box stores since they came to my area. Most people have the idea that since these so-called discount stores buy in such a huge quantity, they pass the savings along to the consumer. What a crock!!! 15 years ago,I wired my shop.I bought everything from a small family owned electrical supply store close to my home. And get this.....when I asked a question....I actually got an intelegent answer.Too bad these corporate giants already put most of the little family sorese out of business. Now it's too late to ever get them back.

I've also found the quality to be much better as supply places. The same hold true with lumber. If I need one 2x4, I'll buy from home despot, if I need a bunch, I go to the local lumber yard. The quality is much better and I don't have to dig through 100 of them to find 10 good ones.

my insurance guy used to work for wholesale lumber dealer, would buy 2 or 3 mill run and pay low cost labor to sort the lumber

good pieces were sold to lumber yards at premium prices, rest was banded and sold cheap to the big boxes

you would pay almost same price at local yards or big box, good profit for the big boxes

I ain't been to a home depot, lowes, OR EVEN ANY LUMBER YARD where I DIDN'T have to pick through 5 billion sticks to get to the good stuff.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the info. I frequently find that whenever I'm lulled into believing that one store is going to have the best prices on everything they sell because they had the best prices on a few items I checked, or on items I checked awhile ago, I get stung. I sometimes wonder if discount stores don't purposely mark up a few items in each department to unreasonable levels just to cash in on their customers' trust and/or laziness. On the other hand, if you made sure you got the very best deal on everything you bought, you'd never have time to do anything else.

All the best, Stan

Saw a special about wally world on public television a few years ago. Lots of inside information and they bragged up how each department had a loss leader to bring the customers in to find the quality was less than great but there were other products on the next shelf with better quality and not so competitive a price that allowed for more profit.
