OT - chainsaw carb adjust - 455 rancher

recently bot Husq 455 rancher, dealer said to bring it back after 3 tanks of gas for carb adjust, tried that, they said to leave it and they would get to it, whole table full of saws ahead of me so forget that, decided to adjust it myself

Husq manual is good for idle adj but real vague on hi-speed adj, I have ordered chainsaw tach and did search online, seems I need to clip ears on limiter caps, warm the saw up good with clean air filter and good gas, then adjust for max rpm and then richen it a tad

is that a reasonable plan or recipe for disaster?

You seem to have the general idea down Supergrumpy, the only thing that concerns me is that if you have to ask how to do this, you probably aren`t going to recognize the correct "four stroking" sound when you achieve it. I think that you will be better off adjusting max rpm by use of the tach you ordered.

BTW, there is some range of adjustability of the screws with the limiters on, hence the term limiters versus stops. You may very well be able to make the necessary adjustments without touching the limiters. If however you do need more range you can pull the limiters off, make your adjustments, and then replace the limiters in a position that allows future minor adjustments. Your dealer should have done this for you but given the scenario that you have described I tend to doubt that they did.

Another thing, clipping the limiter caps does not automatically void the warranty, however if you had a lean sieze and it can be reasonably assumed or proven that you adjusted the saw too lean, your warranty is kaput.

everything I see points to going too rich if there is any doubt

back thne they said the carb would need adjustment, I will mark the original settings and go back to them if the saw doesn't cut better after I tinker

cuts pretty good right now but better is better

As long as you know what the max RPM is, then you should be good to go. But if the tach you ordered is not electonic that you paid at least $100.00 or more for, then you are heading for a disaster. they can, depending on the saw cylinder quality be anywhere from 12,000 to 13,500 top rpm. If the dealer was not able to adjust it, you might be heading for disaster as if the dealer could not adjust it, there could be other problems. FYI, if you cut the ears off the limiter caps, you will void your warranty, unless you and the dealer are good friend. If the saw is running good, why mess with it???

when I bot the saw, tech said to just bring the saw in and they would adjust it while I waited, now their story has changed and I have to leave the saw and they will get to it "sometime", trying to get some wood cutting done so thats why I'm trying to adjust it myself

think the rev limiter speed is 13,500, tach is digital, made for 2 strokes

what good is a warranty if the dealer just stacks up the saws?

Yep, I agree with you, he should not make promises that he cannot keep. We do the same thing, why do we do it? Because when a saw is new, it can be a little stiff, you maight say, so after it runs a few tanks of gas through it, it should be readjusted, because it will loosen up and can run a little lean and it will destroy a saw real quick if the mixture is too lean. All digital tachs will work on 2 and 4 cycle engines. But as I said before, setting RPM that high, you do not want to buy a cheap digital tach. If it seams like it is running right, I probably would not mess with it too much. I would also look for a dealer that his word is good longer than the time it took him to take your money and get you out the door.
