What is it with bed rails? I started cutting some 1-1/2" rails on the metal band saw, when I got to the third cutoff, the saw stated screeching and howling and just about stopped cutting. The blade teeth have lost all set and will now barely cut water pipe. I also drilled several 1/8" holes in a couple of pieces before the same thing happened to the drill bit. Now it won't drill at all. What's in that railing???? I can cut the stuff with a hack saw, but what's the point, since I can't drill it or weld it. I once took some cut rails to a welder friend and the joints just christalized and fell apart. What's the secret?

Bed rails are made from Rail steel! The following link tells a bit more about it.

I see no mention of bed rails at the Railsteel site, but the ability to shear, punch and weld is stated. Nothing is said about sawing & drilling. All bed rails I've seen may have some punched tabs and are rivited.

They are high carbon steel and will dull a blade or drill in short order. I use zip blades in my angle grinder and it handles it well.

Good source of cheep steel for projects. 6013 rod works well.

I use em all the time, weld em with AC 6013 rods, no problems yet.

Well think about what they where made for in the first place. A bed does take a lot on pounding when used by people so they have to be extra strong and so they are also extra hard. But they do make good iron for thing you want to build and have hold up. I have 2 or 3 deer stands made for bed rails and they have weathered tornados and ice storms and are still holding up real good even after 10 years of being hooked to a tree

They're a special steel, don't recall just what...but tempered, spring steel or hi/low carbon content or something.Have used hundreds of feet of em over the years for projects(usually drilled/bolted).Used pilot point drills w/lube to drill, cutoff wheel to cut. Most doesn't weld easily and to cap it off theres like 3 different compounds used..one kind(very old)is almost unworkable. BUT,they are cheap :)

Are they stainless or chrome plated steel?

They are of hard steel, probably same as springs, but I'm no expert. I have used bed rails in welded projects using an AC welder and 6011 rods with no problems. They are hard on drill bits too.
