The Briggs and Stratton engine on my lawn mower only works when the throttle is in the fast/choke position. The gas also sometimes drains away through the carburetor when the mower is not in use. It is an older type 8 hp engine with a bowl type carburetor.

The others have come up with some good things to check, I would also check to make sure you don't have a vacum leak were the carb mounts to the block. Get the engine running and spray carb cleaner around the area where the carb and block come together, if the idle changes it had a vacum leak and a new gasket should do it Good luck

Check or replace fuel filter. Sounds like the carb. needs to be cleaned and a rebuild job would be in order..inexpensive if you DIY.

First, clean the carbureator and make certain the gas is flowing evenly through the gas line. I bought a Ferguson TO-30 that had the problem with only running with the choke wide open,I hadn't been able to run it for two years and found the gas tank strainer was rotted to nothing and there was a pound of nuts, washer and bolts(????? ???) in the gas tank itself. I am having the gas tank completely cleaned and internaly sealed. I am also having an inline gas filter put between the sediment bowl and tank. Luck

Be sure your gas cap has a vent in it. Otherwise, you have a restriction in the gas line or carburetor jets.
