Another garage door opener question

I have a Sears chain drive opener on a 9 X 9 door. It started to give us trouble this summer. When you close it it goes down to about a foot off the floor then starts back up again. If you stop it right then and try to close it again it will usually go the rest of the way down and stay closed. We do not have an electric eye on it. I have not checked it yet but thought if any of you have any ideas I may have a starting point. Thanks.
Phil

Disconnect the opener and confirm that your door is closing freely. If need be, lube the rollers or anything else that might be dragging or binding. Lube the rail that the opener shuttle runs on. After you're certain that the mechanism is working smooth, try turning up the "Down" force adjustment.

Note that if the down force is properly adjusted, you should be able to put a 2x4 under the door and the opener will reverse when the door hits the 2x4.

I had a similar problem some years ago and after finding no binding or similar mechanical problems, I cleaned the circuit board with contact cleaner and it has worked fine ever since!

You are probably way ahead of me on this, but are you sure your door is not binding at that point? Even if the opener is not equipped with an electric eye it may reverse itself upon meeting slight resistance. Or, can you adjust (increase) the downward force of the opener?
