Hi, I need info on pipe benders. What type of bender will bend the most different types of material without breaking the bank...I would like to hear what you have, what it can do, and how much it cost. Thank you for your info, Scottyb

There was a guy in 'Farm Show' awhile back that made one out of a piece of I-beam and a hydraulic cylinder. The thing looked a lot like a wood splitter with a car or truck wheel fastened horizontally on a hub that sat where the wedge is on a splitter. He had a stop on one side of the beam and a bar welded across the width of the wheel and you stuck the pipe in behind them. There was a cable attached to the wheel and to the cylinder rod; when the cylinder retracted it pulled the pipe around the wheel. I saw a similar deal for bending mine-car rail at the old Cresson Mine between Cripple Creek and Victor, Colo. years ago. It used a steam cylinder to pull the wheel around.

Hi Scotty,

There's hicky pipe benders, a radius shoe with a pipe handle, for about $35eh that bends 1/2", 3/4" sch40 fairly easy with some grunt. A 1" can only be done in EMT or thin wall pipe.

Tubing benders are for 3/8" OD pipe and smaller.

My rathers is a cheap hydraulic jack bender as it's less work on the back and arms.

I have one of the $99 ones from habor fright and it does every thing I want it to do. I have even bent a piece of 3/4 inch flat into a U shape with it and my shop press which is also one of there cheap ones.

Hi old,

I got one of those too. I was kind of disappointed in it, but from reading the postings here I think maybe I had the wrong idea of what it was supposed to do. I had in mind to do arches for gates, garden arbors, and such. Mildly ornamental, in other words. After using it a couple of times, I couldn't see any way to create a continuous, even arch. It was probably unreasonable of me to think that I could spend less than $100 to be able to do something that a local welder/metal fabricator does with a machine that cost him thousands. Too good to be true syndrome.

What is that bender supposed to be able to do?

All the best, Stan

I use mine to do 90 degree bends in pipe all the time. I just made a 17 foot gate with pipe and used it to bend each of the 4 corners. But you need to have it up off the ground a ways on something strong so you can get a lot of space for the end of the pipe to roam

If you can't get good bends in pipe with your chi-com bender, fill the pipe with sand and heat it. you will be able to bend nice, even radii.

Take a look at Harbor Freight or Northern Tool. I believe both offer low budget bends that use a hydralic jack.

Don't know what type of pipe you wish to bend. I can only relate to EMT Electrical Conduit and to bend that I have 2 Ridgid Hand Benders with a 48" x 3/4" Black Iron Pipe Handle. One is for 3/4" and one is for 1/2" EMT. I don't bend Galvanized or Black Iron Plumbing or Gas Pipe as correct Fittings exist to get around just about any angle that these types of Pipe require. I've seen Hyd. Tail Pipe Benders, and Hyd. Jack Type Benders but have never used either of them.

The cheapest benders are the ones that use a hydraulic jack and different size shoes for the size of pipe. I've seen them in 12 ton and 16 ton for up to 2 inch and up to 3 inch. They sell them at Princess auto but should be available elsewhere. The 12 ton is $199.99 and the 16 ton is $299.99 including all the dies. Any other type of benders will cost a lot more. Dave
