Hydraulics on a Post Pounder

I have a front mount hydraulic post pounder that I put on a Jet Star 3 tractor. I am not real sure how the hydraulics hook up. It has a single spool valve that runs it. There is one big hose that comes out the top of the valve and goes to the cylinder, the other outlet is plugged off. I connected lines to the in and out on the valve and then to the tractor. It will lift the pounder fine but when you pull the handle on the valve the other way it does nothing. You have to push the lever all the way in to raise it and it seems like you have to have the handle in about the half way point to make it drop, and if you push it to far it will start to raise again. Is this what they call a single acting cylinder? Do I need both lines comming off of the tractor or just one. Why when I pull the lever it does nothing? Sorry for being so long winded. Thanks for the help.

Thanks a bunch for the link. Our pounder is a shaver, but I cant read the model number anymore, but it looks just like that one. I should be able to get it pounding now. Thanks to everyone for their help!!!

Take a look at the parts diagram. It shows one #16 pressure hose coming from the tractor. One #32-16" hose valve to cyl. and one number 33 return hose from the valve to the tractor. This #33 hose does not go thru the valve on the tractor, it must go directly into the hydraulic reservoir and make sure you tie it down because the pressure will blow it out of the reservoir. On my tractor I ran the hose back into the fill hole on the reservoir.

Right on the hookup. On the one we had, it took a different valve depending on whether the tractor had an open or a closed center hydraulic system.

Hey thanks for the info. That makes sense why it drops slow, I am not letting the oil return to the resivior fast enough. I will give it a look and get things changed. Thanks again.

Mine has a pressure hooked to one side of the valve and the other side(large diameter hose) goes into the reservior, the rear axle housing. When you lift up the control handle, it lifts the pounder and when you shove the handle down, it vents the cylinder to the reservior and the weight and the springs drop the pounder. I think you are hooked up incorrectly. My pounder is hooked off the three point and I use a pressure line from one side of one remote valve and the big hose fits on a special adapter that goes directly into the reservior. You cannot run the pounder using both sides of the remote.
