Anothr Garage Door Opener Question

I don't remember the name of my door opener off hand, but it is on a 9x7 residential overhead garage door. About a week ago when my wife opened the door, the opener did not stop when it reached the top. The "winch head" went till it hit a bolt which served as a stopper. It then just sat there grunting. I did not have time to look at it then so I simply unplugged it and disconnected the opener. We're opening the door by hand now days. What would cause it not to stop in the proper position? No one had been tampering with it. Door opens/closes properly.

When I get a chance to work on it I figure I'll somehow get the chain loose again and attempt to lower the lift...

Any suggestions?

If it's a chain drive opener, the chain probably jumped a few teeth. That's happened a couple of times with my Sears opener when the chain got a little loose.

Loosen the chain adjustment so you can remove the chain from the drive sprocket. You should then be able to operate the opener to locate the "full up" and "full down" limits. Run the opener all the way down, and with the door closed reconnect the chain and tighten it. You may have to adjust the up and down limits if you got the chain off a tooth.

Hey there Glenn;
Without knowing the make of opener you have,
it's hard to tell what is causing the problem.
I have 15 yr experiance.Look at your limit switches first,some are on the chain,some are
inside the motor housing,some are on the track.
These switches stop the door travel. lots of luck. Bob
God Bless

Sometimes, relay contacts on the motor control board stick, so the relay can't release and shut the motor "off" when the limit is "tripped".
