The trans in my '85 Ranger did the same thing, the fluid was black, smelled burnt and had metal filings in it as well. I pitched the old one and stuck a junkyard tranny in it, 5 years later it still works great. The A4LD tranny isn't the best tranny in the world for reliablity.

I would also be tempted to check the shift linkage, this happended to my full size ford. Something so simple as a loose ajustment screw can cause this problem. just my $0.02

The bigger problem if you have a 4x drive. Your transfer case is going bad. I just replaced mine a couple weeks ago. Saw the guy last week and he told me he did FOUR of them is a two and one half week period! I was number one. No body checks the fluid in them. They take ATF fluid. Let us know.

Likely, your "forward clutch" has failed, and the plates are burned/warped/torn loose from the splines, or doubled up, so they are dragging all the time.

Bob is right - your forward clutch has wore out and welded itself together. Bad news for you is the trans has to come apart to fix it.
