i built a wood splitter 22 yrs ago i bought the pump from quality farm fleet i let a friend borrow it for about a year now i notice it doesnt have the splitting power it once had sometimes it will just set there on a large piece of wood not even pulling down the engine would it be worth it to take the pump to a hydralic shop and get it checked out or just buy another one i think a new one is $125.00

If the cylinder extends and retracts and the pump is a gear pump then the relief valve is likely dirty, or the valve has seat is worn. new oil wouldnt hurt either. also check oil level.

It could be as simple as the pressure relief in the valve "popping" too soon from wear or a broken spring, or someone tinkering with it, or as serious as a worn-out pump. You and I know $125.00 isn't going to get you very far at a hydraulic shop, so you may as well check into it a bit yourself, starting with the pressure relief valve.
