What is your take on the unloader system on these compressors?(rol-air) It is the only thing i dont like. They have a little 1/4" line coming off the check valve over to the unloader, and through this line they vent to atmosphere the full pump output at idle. It seems to vent just enough so the pump quits filling the tank, and doesn't load the pump too bad. But it still loads the pump pretty good, you can open the drain cock on the after cooler while runnin and the motor picks up noticeably. But when it really bothers me is when starting it, unless the tank is empty, you have to open the drain on the after cooler before it will start with any ease. It might improve some after the motor is broken in, dunno. Like if it is still hot and you try to start it back up with a full tank and unloader unloading, it will usually catch but chugs for a few seconds and then speeds up to normal idle and is fine. If you open the drain it licks right off. This system must work petty reliably, and not affect any thing or they wouldn't still be using it. So whats your take on it? Doesn't it leave considerable load on the motor? And does that sound like the norm, having to open the drain on the after cooler to relieve enough back pressure to start easily? It may have some thing to do with it not being broken in yet? Or it could be the weight oil in it? I am not sure what weight is in it?? so any thoughts on this style unloading system? Is 1/4" line big enough to vent the amount of air coming out of the pump at idle to atmosphere? Really appreciate your answers to my off the wall ramblings!!

later!! chris

There should be a small aluminum "pivot" on the top of the pilot valve which you flip up to unload the compressor for start up. It sends air directly to the pilot valve from the compressor so it doesn't load up. This should all be laid out in your operation manual.

Oil weight has nothing to do with anything.

This is a simple and reliable unloading system which should give you many years of good service.

"Oil weight has nothing to do with anything." Please explain the reasoning behind your statement. It has a splash lubricating system. Too heavy of an oil increases the load. An increased load will make it harder to start.

even if you flip that up, it still just has too much resistance to start easy. I guess that is an up side, means the pump is trying to move a large volume of air, which you can never have enough volume..
