I want to get one of those non-contact tachometers
that read the rpms by bouncing a laser off a piece of a reflective tape. The price range on these things varies from $10 to $200 or more. I'm not going to make a living with one, but I don't want something that'll crap out after one use. Any
advice on brand/price? Much appreciate any info.

Hi Mark,

I bought a photocell tach that plugs into my DVM with a "K"? "J"? connector for less than $100. You calibrate by strobing a florescence lite, 7000 pulses/min = 7000rpm.

Accurate and simple to use. I got mine at a refrigeration suppply house but are common where they sell DVM's ot testing equipment. If I remember correct, AMP Probe brand (top of the line) was just as cheap as the no name brand.

Lot of room for error using the mechanical connection types, like the ones that use a rubber tity on the shaft.

What is really nice is the fact that the electronics on some of these units is less complicated that that of your TV remote. With production in places like China, even cheap units do a great job.

I also bought an ebay cheapo. Tested it against a tached tractor. Works just fine. Probably not something you want to drop very often.

Was exactly the tool I needed to diagnose one of my Cats, which is now back working hard. Price was worth it for that one repair. And it still works!

I bought a cheap one off the internet. It works well but I have to take the batteries out of it when I am not using it or they will discharge.

I felt the same way when I went to buy one. I went the cheap route and got one off Ebay for $20. Figgured if I was wrong I was out less money with being wrong about a cheap one than being took on an expensive one. Darn thing works like a charm! Hope I have not jinxed myself now...
