Hello all, I"ve a question that probably seems simple, but i don"t have a good answer for. What I"ve experienced is my method of wrapping a small tree with log chain and then using the bucket of the skidloader to uproot the rascal, usually results in the chain sliding upwards and eventually off the stump. I am asking for advice on this, and thanks in advance.
Dennis.

With my backhoe I always had better luck pushing the entire tree over since you can get up high on it, more leverage. When it's down, cut it up.

around here we use whats called a loggers knot take the chain around the tree then around the chain and hook it back into itself makes a slip knot the harder you pull the tighter it gets

Wouldn't a wire rope work better? Around here we call them a "choker". You can buy them made up with a loop on each end. Put one loop through the other, wrap it around the stump and lift. Tightens up real good as you apply pressure.

I put both hook ends of the chain together and tie the other end of my chain in a "half hitch" around whatever I'm pulling on. The suggestion of three raps around an item with the last one wrapping over the first two works good also, Dave.

You need a chain that tightens like a hangman's noose - as Old already mentioned. Usually called a "choker chain" if you buy one from a logging supply dealer. I use 5 or 6 at time on the back of my dozer.

JDM, any idea what the name of that hook is ? I never saw one quite perzactly like that. It looks like it would be handy.

Chokers, Keyholes, and Sliders in reply to Davis In SC, 10-18-2007 20:48:27
The hook itself is called a "choker" and if you buy it attached to some high-tensile logging chain, the whole assembly is usually sold as a "choker chain." Any good farm supply or logging supply chore should have it.

When logging with a cable winch - you usually put sliders and keyhole-grabs on the winch-cable - somtimes 6 to 8 of them. I've attached some photos. A keyhole is real handy - even if you're not using a cable or a winch. Take a keyhole- and attach a standard grab-hook to it - and it makes it real easy to attach multiple chains to it - if you want to pull more than one tree at once.

Out here in logging country they are called choker hooks, course that was before the treehuggers adopted the spotted owls.

On small stuff I always make three wraps with the third wrap crossing over at least one wrap. That causes the top wrap to force the first wrap into the bark. To large of links for the size of tree will make them hard to hold fast also.

the knot your using is basically a clover hitch and will usually hold

Be sure that you dont flip your tractor over trying to pull out the stump. (thats me good deed for the day)

What I have done is put a clove hitch in the chain around the tree. The same clove hitch you would put in a rope. Works if the chain is not too big for the tree. You also need to wrap the tail end of the chain around the tree a couple of more revolution's in the direction of your clove hitch and also put in a half hitch. Good luck

I've found that if you wrap the chain around at least twicw it will hold better. And as old says use a chain with a slip end so it will self tighten.

One thing you need is a slip type hook on one end of the chain so when you start pulling the chain gets tighter. If your using the type of hook that locks to the chain link then thats where your problem is.
