Another generator question: I store a 5000W/10HP generator in my outside shop. How often should I start this and let it run for 10 minutes or so?? I dont think it is wise to let it set for extended periods of time. Also need a quieter muffler. Thanks..

Hi Mac,
There are mufflers made especially for stationary engines. Some are extra quiet for use near hospitals, schools, etc. The owner of a generator I helped re-condition had several catalogs on these mufflers. Unfortunately I didn't bother to remember any of the manufacturers, so I can't give you any leads other than to tell you there are quiet mufflers available out there. Good luck...Al English

I exercise my generator (4 KW) only once a year. Let it run for 10 - 15 minutes at about 3/4 load (old waffle iron and a hair dryer), then shut off the gas and let it run the carb dry. After it cools I drain the gas tank and dump a little motor oil in the jug. Then give the crank a couple turns to spread the oil around and leave it on compression stroke (so both valves are closed). It always starts on the 1st pull a year later.

It is a good idea to check frequently for mice, etc, or to pack in some mothballs or something to repel the critters. One year I discovered the crankshaft locked up tight on mine. Turned out mice or chipmunks had packed the flywheel cover and generator end bell with sunflower seeds. No permanant harm was done, but it was a PITA to clean up and would have caused a delay had I needed emergency power in a hurry.

Ditto on the requirement for quieter muffler!

Once a month, and put a load on it while you run it, old electric fry pans make great loads, so do milkhouse heaters.
Inspect the generator end for evidence of mice, they love to nest in generator housings, and do tons of damage.
