Have a 16 year old Kenmore that works fine but hardly ever shuts off. Getting socked 14 cents/kilowat hour here and maybe it's time to trade the thing in? Do the new ones run all the time? Thanks for the help!!

Gordy from Iowa,

Leland has good advice! You'll be surprised just how fast the new ones will be paid for by the reduction of electricity consumption. I know it's hard to get rid of something that is "still running" but in this case you'll be glad you did!

Frost free refidgerators need room at the back to circulate cold air.Shelves usually have a 2 inch clearance from the back inside wall. Stuff gets pushed back so the cold air is blocked.Put a thermometer inside ,you need 40 degrees.Make sure the coils on the back are not plugged with dust.Fellow I worked for said a refridgerator is a place where you put food until you have time to throw it away.

just buy a new energy star rated frige ,it will pay for it's self fast since it will use a lot less energy than that older unit .

Throw it out, the energy cost isnt worth keeping or fixing.

The last time that I had a refrigerator running all time it was the auto defrost timer had stopped and the coils were frozen over with ice. A new timer fixed it right up.

our old one used to ice up in humid weather, chill coils way down inside get loaded up with ice buildup and cold air could not circulate, usually have very weak cold air flow into the freezer

to fix, put everything in another refig or ice chest and unplug the refrig, prop door open and put small heater in there and let it thaw out GOOD, huge amounts of water will come out the bottom, our refrig would run like new afterwards until it iced up again

or, the "eggshell" timer for defrost cycle could be stuck, refrig will never deforst and you get the ice buildup

hope this helps

Have you pulled it from the wall and vacummed the coils out? Mine seems to collect a lot of dust bunnies.

The fans seem to collect a lot of dust and lint on the baldes so eventually they don't move much air. That stuff really gets caked on and has to be scrubbed off.

Hi gordy,

I agree with Mark, clean the condesor coils then check for a door gasket leak. Close the door on a normal piece of paper and if the gasket is correct then pulling the paper out should have resistance. Adjust the gasket seal by loosing the screws under the gasket then retighten.

Be sure the door lite goes off when closed. Bad door switch?

99% of defrost timers hang open causing a no run condition. Of the ones that hang shut will cause the evap coils to ice. Ice is a insulator thus all cooling will stop.

Slow fan speed. Replace fan motor is about the only way to tell if this was the problem. Usually a no cooling diagnose tho.
