3.5hp sickle bar mower, adjust drive pulley?

I have a 3.5hp walk behind sickle mower and I am trying the change the diameter of the drive pulley - it looks like it might be variable. Looks like a Jari, but no name on it. The drive pulley on the engine has 2 pulleys on it (designed as one piece), one large and the other small - which looks like it has adjustable sheaves. On the pulley shaft (separate from the crank of the engine) there is a threaded lock nut, it has a loop of wire on it with one end going into a hole in the nut to stop it from turning. I removed this wire ring and the locking nut and it looks like the outer sheave on the pulley needs to be screwed out on the same threads to reduce the diameter for the belt. Is this correct? I need to know so I know how much pressure or heat I chould apply to it to try and adjust it. Thanks!

If it appears that half of the pulley is on threads you should be able to see two separate halves when looking in the groove. If it's frozen, then use some rust desolver to free it up before any drastic measures are taken. Do not use a hammer! If it breaks, there probably is no longer any replacement part. My Bolens also has the variable pulley. I bought the last one in 1975 after a 10 state search.

This was sounding like a Bolens walk behind tractor with a mower attachment until you mentioned a threaded sheave side. On the Bolens, the loose sheave side slips out as you unscrew that nut the spring wire rides in. Can you find any green paint on it?
