I just don"t understand what pleasure comes from destruction of someone else"s property. I am a Rural mail carrier, several of the Halloween displays put up have already been destroyed with pumpkins, corn stalks, and hay bales in the road. In addition, Western Illinois University is nearby, and the local paper has been reporting the vandal problems, decided to focus on one victim and follow it thru. She has had problems with beer cans in her yard all the time, has a chain link fence around her yard, even went so far as to get a German Shepherd. Still had problems, latest in sorry story, vandals came back at 2:25 AM, not sure what night, but this time she may have them by the short hairs IF the police are able to get the images enhanced far enough to identify them. She set up security cameras, and cameras have them in the act of knocking over and ripping out the fence. But, the big question remains, WHY? If just her, could understand a little, but to go around the countryside and destroy?? WHY, WHY, WHY

The real secret is to have a "reputation". When they know it's gonna hurt, the dont do it.

For the mail box: 1/4" steel mounted on 6" well caseing, set in 1-1/2 yards of concrete. I have found pieces of broken baseball bats in the front yard. That HAD to hurt. Last drunk to hit it stopped 100 yards down the road in the ditch, totaled. Was 6 months before he was able to drive again.

For the other stuff: 2 dogs that like to bark, and 12 gage mossberg & rock salt. Dogs bark, just fire a shot high in the general direction, they dont come back. Rock salt is for just in case you do hit them..

I haven't had a problem in 15 years.

Seems like a good bit of the time, idiots around here get caught doing something like that are 20 - 30 years old. Usually drunk. Lack of age isn't the problem.

It all depends on whats around. Living out in the country, I don't know what its like to truely have nothing to do, but city peoples behavior is quite differnt. Just imagine being young, full of energy, living in the city or a college dorm and what money you get working a job mostly goes for apartment rent and nessesitys, and all you own is a cheap car and some clothes. Theres night clubs and bars, but those cost money and get old after a few visits, what are you going to do?. The answer is you get bored, maybe aimlessly cruise around in your car with friends a little bit, drink and do drugs out of pure boredom, and get into trouble. There really is very little to do on a saturday night when you don't have any money and don't own nothing in most areas. Vandalism just turns into something to do.
Most people do grow out of it of course, since most everybody ends up having kids soon after college, and your prioritys shift to making a living to support your family and of course, more stuff enters your life.

Because most teenagers today are retards, freaks of society, in which they have to do ANYTHING to get a certain number of people to like them and perhaps get a date.

This is america, in which everyone is LIBERAL, therefore punishing your children is a crime.

Mailboxes were getting bashed on a regular basis around here for awhile until 1 night. Someone filled a ziplock sandwich bag with dark purple indelable ink and laid it out flat on top of their brand new black mailbox. 2 nights later it got mashed. The mailbox owner called the police and reported the mailbox and that the people that mashed it threw something purple all around. As I understand it the 2 thirty somethings still had purple on their faces, hands and truck when they tryed to explain the matter to the district magistrate.

I'm kind of in the same boat as Lanse, 17 years old, except we live in Oklahoma City. Driving home from work last night, just about home, I slowed down because there was some stuff in the road. Wouldn't you know it I get hit with an egg ON THE MOVE. I look around for a few minutes, but get home quick to wash the stuff off. I fail to see the entertainment in it.

As I told Lanse, always glad to have younger members on the forum. I still believe most people are basically good, just takes a few to make life bad for lots of people. Won't start preaching religion on this site, but will just at least quote the golden rule of to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I've had to deal with vandalism year-round, and the absolute best payback is done with a camera. I set up four video cameras and have recorded many events and turned them over to the prosecuter (not to the police.) I've got a 100% conviction rate too. The thing that really surprised me is that I've NEVER caught a teenager, it's always been men in their late twenties to late thirties. Loozers just resent people that work for a living.

We allow children to discover themselves, instead of them being made to follow the right path. Most of us or them outgrow the foolishness and become solid citizens. A person with a good sense of who he or she is will have enough self-respect that they will not do these things. Also there is a problem with what I call a pack mentality. One kid is great but when you get a few together, someone tries to be cute or funny and then all bets are off.
Does not stop me from wanting to beat them half to dead though. I drive by an old cemetary and a week ago someone spun some dounuts in the grass next to it. It was to rough to cut fast before they did that.

Dont get it. Some people I know probabally do that, I want no part in it. I have better things to do, mess with animals or old lawnmowres, etc. I love working on my current one, and would rather do that then go destroy stuff of someone elces and risk getting shot/arrested for it. I just dont understand it. And I'm "one of them" I'm 14. I would not be happy if I spent my time and money and some jerk came around and destroyed it.

My problems have been primarily mail boxes. Can"t hide them. Gave up having a nice one, now it's just something the rural carrier won't refuse to put mail in. Had a battery swiped from my tractor recently - right in my yard near the mercury vapor night time security light.

As mentioned in post, I am a rural mail carrier. Have been a sub in Nebraska, moved to Colorado as a sub to make regular, now in IL. Anyhow, have seen LOTS of boxes trashed. Makes me think about one in Colorado NO ONE will destroy without major damage to themselves or their vehicle. The only possible damage they MIGHT do would be to spin the box on the post where a bolt goes thru. It is set up with a pipe the right size to mount to the bottom of the box inside a larger pipe, filled with concrete between the two pipes. The mailbox itself looks like one of the large mailboxes for parcels, but when you open the door you actually find a standard size mailbox encased in concrete, with 3/16 plate welded to the inside of the big box, and about 1/8 plate welded to the mailbox door to keep the weight of the door down. Just thought you would enjoy. DOUG

Hi Doug,

Vandalism makes no sense to me, either, but I think the impetus to vandalize is far more common than we would like to think, and not very far below the surface. All it takes is the justification that some group is "the enemy", or "bad people", or, in its most fundamental expression, "not like us" for us to be off and running to destroy their property, take their possessions, kill them. It happened when the first Europeans set foot on this continent, and it happened yesterday. Vandalism is acting on the same urge but without the benefit of some bogus religious, or political, or philosophical justification.

Of course, I don't mean us. We wouldn't do that. I mean them.

All the best, Stan

What a bunch of do gooders! 75-80 years ago my grandparents & parents took farm gates down turned outhouses over, once put a farm wagon on top of a tobacco barn! Kids today are too lazy to have fun! Only one mistake it was the bosses wagon, took all night to put it up there& all day to get it down!

Didn't do that kind of stuff when younger because didn't have the time or energy after doing chores and brought up to respect property. A little time off to go to town sometimes meant running into trouble making townies who did try some vandalizeing on car one Halloween- not too much problem after sending 1 of small group of attackers to hospital, police observed across street at start of trouble and called for backup when recognized me- knew family training and work practice (hay baleing time) was liable to suprise attackers. Funny how the attackers backed off when blood started flowing. RN

I have a simple solution... NO displays of halloween crap, nothing to vandalize. Problem SOLVED.

When did halloween get to be such a big deal it's overshadowed all holidays but Christmas in sales of "seasonal" chinese junk at WaldoWorld???

A friend was having trouble with a mailbox being knocked over, he put a mailbox on a 4 x 4 steel tube. When these kids hit it one night, he went and put up the old post and box and hid the metal one. The kids had a hard time explaining why there dads new truck was torn up so bad.

I've often thought about the differences between being mature and a resposible adult compared to ones seemingly wreckless youth. I think it's inherent for adolescents to want to be mischievous, part of being a kid, and growing up, sometimes at just a whim, maybe most times, other times not, but they don't realize the consequences of their actions or what is going too far, think about being a kid, the boundaries in the world are endless.

I also think that it's a job well done for any parent that can educate them a bit on the subject and actually get through to them about these and lots of other things that are a bad influence, but without sheltering them. Kids will and want to be kids, when it comes to vandalism and lots of other things, usually starts with someone elses influence, I can remember getting roped into bombing cars with eggs or something and many other stupid things similar, most typical of any youth, that would get you into trouble, and your parents would probably get a laugh out of when behind closed doors, after they punished you, but being malicious, destructive, dangerous by doing things beyond what used to be clean fun, no harm done, that is where they need some support. We had a sense of where to draw the line or not succomb to peer pressure, and most of our parents were very busy then, we figured things out on our own, because we had to.

Sometimes drugs, alcohol or someone with a really bad attitude is going to influence others, peer pressure, have to do it to be cool, rite of passage, what have you, and parents that don't take the time to do their best to help and support a kid while growing up, kids are smart, problem is getting through to them in a way that works and puts them on the same level, remember when you were a kid, some people you would listen to and respect, others would be just the opposite. I can remember a lot of good natured people that were fun and others that were just miserable, no one listens to people like that.

Today it's different, I remember if you had a beef with someone, you'd settle it out in the back, behind the church was our spot, you know with the circle of people around, when it was over the worst you had a was bloody nose or a black eye. Now they find guns and other weapons, gangs that kill, and all the rest that is different from earlier generations, vandalism, graffiti etc. is a lot different than the shaving cream, eggs, tomatoes, toilet paper and or what may have been the line years ago. I can recall doing some stupid things, most harmless, some dangerous, but we also spent most of our time doing things that were a lot more fun, like digging in the old farm dumps, I think it has a lot to do with the people in and around any kids life, the time spent with them and what they do, my parents did not spend much if any time with me as a kid, I think I was smart enought to stay out of trouble for the most part, but would have really enjoyed sports a little more, doing a little shooting, and always liked any kind of equipment, with activities like those and others, you don't have a lot of time to cause trouble.

One thing is for sure, kids will be kids on halloween, mischief night etc. and even with the best parents, support and education on the reality of things when you eff up, they will still push it, so probably best to not leave them any targets or fuel the fire. We used to go to an abandoned cemetery on halloween, very old and unkept, had one leg find a rotted pine box, fell right in I did, the place was a business venture at the turn of the century but went bust, they should have filmed a movie there, supposedly haunted, we would bring some beer, hide and drink, get chased out by a sweep by the police, they were coming while we were drinking behind a headstone, was smoking a cigar and the smoke was rising in the cool crisp fall air illuminated by the moon, what a scene, we'd leave, and I never saw or knew anyone who vandalized the place, the graves that were left were always respected, people would just kind of roam around in there, most of the damage was done years before or was from neglect, they did clean up the place, does not have the same character it did then, funny though, everyone is different, none of us had any trouble with alcohol or drugs then, couple of beers was the extent of it, just like it is today, moderation, and good ole clean fun.

We've had a lot of vandalism near a local college, but the perpetrators have been caught, by a special patrol that has been working, they were slashing tires and breaking glass, things we would never do when that age, not sure why it's different today.

Alcohol is a drug and probably made these kids or college kids do stupid things. Best if there caught and the Judge makes them clean the street and mess up. In those neighborhoods probably not a bad idea to leave a porch light on to deter the vandals.

2 ways of looking at things here, if the vandals are caught, the odds are that they will just get a slap on the wrist, which Daddy will pay, and they will return and do more serious damage to the property, or, if they are caught, and found to be athletes, they will be let off without so much as a warning, and the coach will say that they were just being 'boys', and they meant no harm.
Athletes, and football players especially, be they in high school, college, or professional, are totally above the law, and not held accountable for their actions. Remember the rapists at the University of Colorado were never prosecuted for their crimes, or how the a$$hole Jerry Jones hired the gun toting gangster from Chicago, or said the Vick would be welcome to become one of the Cocaine Cowboys?
If ever there was a justification for vigilante justice, it would be to send a message to these 'heroes' by finding their heads on the 50 yard line come game day.

Most also don't know what it takes to make a buck because there parents hand then the $$ and they have no idea what things really cost as far as the work poeple have to do just to make it now days
