I'm looking for ideas on putting an ID number on a homebuilt trailer. I believe that they used to say to weld your DL# on the tongue. This bothers me with the identity theft going on. On the other hand with the number of trailer thefts in my area (TX) some kind of hidden or not so hidden number seems like a good idea. So, anybody have any ideas?

Hi Tim,

The trouble is you have to find a cop willing to check for a stolen trailer in the first place. Every time I've been stopped, not once has a cop looked at my trailer plate or my paper work. They check my truck but not my trailer.

Then in Arizona, ag-trailers don't need a tag. Another reason a cop will not check on trailer ownership. I have permanate tags on several of my trailers and change those tags from trailer to trailer without any questions. Even tho my RV 5th wheel can't have a permanate tag, no one has question why the tag says "permanate".

So feel lucky if you ever get a trailer checked for ownership.

I know a guy that got his back because he welded a nut on top of one axle in a certain spot. Some people just grind numbers off but whos gonna think a nut would get them caught! Not to many would notice that.

Used to replace the cords regularly in a number of my power tools and always put a piece of paper in the handle saying "stole from...". One Friday I accidently left a drill on the jobsite, in the morning it was gone. I went to the local swap meet and found it among someones stuff for sale.
Long story shortened - I opened the handle for the sherriff and he was still chuckling when he put that kid in the car...

Arizona assigns an ID # to a Homebuilt and they inspect it and then afix a Metal Plate with all the info to the Trailer Frame up front. The metal Plate has a strong adhesive back.Worried about thef? Make your mark only where you know it is,but around here if it gets stolen there is no return of it. Once it's gone it's gone.You heard the story of Const guys wheeling a Wheelbarrow of dirt out the gate ever time at quittng time? Well they weren't stealing Dirt, they were stealing "Wheel Barrows"

Om my trailer I stamped the last four of my SSN in an inconspicuouse place.

Where are you at in TX? I am 60 miles west of Lubbock.

Weld your last name and birth date inside a channel iron rail , so that they can"t get to it. You might do it just behind the hitch or something.

Some states assign an ID number for licensing
homebuilt trailers maybe your's does

One suggestion I remember hearing years ago for vehicles was to drop a business card down inside the door (slide it between the window and the gasket). Or some type of card that contained at least your name or address.

Maybe you could put something similar inside one of the box iron framing members?

Welding or stamping something in a not so visible area, so it's not easily noticed and ground off would be a good idea. Under the tongue maybe.

When stolen items are entered into the Nat"l crime database there are 2 identification blanks on the form.First is the VIN or Serial No of the item.Second blank is for OAN(owner applied number).The VIN/Serial generally has to comply with Federal standards,however the OAN can be pretty much any alpha-numeric combination and is specifically for Owner markings,such as a fleet number(ie:Truck No 5,Name-"Old Red",Company name or such,or any such marking appearing on the item.An old program called Operation Identification touted putting your SS number on items,however as SS files are highly confidential,law enforcement agencies could not access SS files for ANY information,HOWEVER as an OAN this would at least bring up the Nation Crime Info Center filecontaining the balance of data on the stolen item.
