Smoke alarm issue... please help

All 10+ smoke alarms in the house are blaring, but there is no evidence of smoke or fire. They are all hardwired with battery back up and are all connected together.... anyone have any idea what may have caused this? Right now the smoke alarms are disabled, but for safety's sake I'd like to get to the bottom of the problem quickly.....

In the spring and fall, when I open up the house for days at a time, the smoke detectors will occasionally go off when the humidity is high, I close up the house and turn on the air to dry it out and within a hour or so they have quit chirping.

Mine is hardwired and went off about a month ago after a cleaning team has left the house. Figured it was dust or a chemical in the air. Put a fan on it and it quit within a couple of minutes.

Hi Eddie,

At the apartment complex where I worked a few years ago the smoke alarms were also hard wired with battery backup. The procedure for correcting the situation that you describe was not difficult but it was more complicated than you would be able to figure out by trial and error. Getting and following the the instructions would be a good starting point. Many product intruction sheets or manuals are available online or the manufacturer will fax (or mail) you what you need.

Yeah, if I even BEGIN to burn the bacon, the smoke detector will go off 15 ft from the stove. Without any visible smoke. BUT, I've had smoke pour out from the fireplace when starting a fire and not getting a good draft, to the point that you can see the smoke floating around the family room at the ceiling AND the smoke alarm stays silent. (Fireplace is about the same distance from the alarm as the stove). Is there something in food that the alarms are more sensitive to? This post has reminded me to test the 3 smoke and 3 CO detectors we have.

There are two types of smoke detectors - I'm not expert but this is what I understand .....

One type works by detecting light scatter and the other uses radioactivity, an the have different sensitivities to different kinds of fires.

One is sensitive to smoke from "hot", actual flame producing fires,

the other is sensitive to smoke from smoldering fires.

It is a good idea to have some of each kind in your house. I believe some manufacturers now make single units with both kinds of detectors.

Dust accumulations or the presence of a small spider in one of the units can cause such symptoms. Using gentle air pressure, blow out the units.

Agree with above, probably dust in one of the detectors.

How did you disable all the detectors? By unplugging them all? What I'm getting at is could you determine which detector caused the initial trip? Some have blinking lights that tell you their status; usually a blinking green light means they have power and are working, a red blink means they have tripped. At least that's how most commercial alarms work.

Good timing for such discussion - it is Fire Prevention Week, after all.

Yep, took mine off and slapped it on the countertop a few times a a spider came out.

It still goes off when the little woman decides to do some cooking.
