I have just been given and old(at least I think it's old) grinding pedestal with a seat on it. It has been modified so that it may use an electric motor but I need to buy a new grinding wheel. The wheel is approx. 3" wide and I can't say how tall it was. Anyone know of a place on the net where I may find such a thing..

Many thanks J. Coleman

J: Several years ago we used a dual wheel grinder, the wheels were about 2" X 10" and It seems we got them at the time from Norton. Now, I have an old, old stone Pat'd 1885 according to the marking on the hub. It measures 2" X 17". The hub assembly is loose and I am trying to redo it. The spindle has been I suppose made from a homemade spindle that is threaded, with 2 -3" flanges that screw together to compress the stone. Believe it to be sandstone?
Anxious to get this spindle centered so I may mount it to a gear reduction motor head.

JC, those were the old sandstone grinders and I don't think you'll find a new one in captivity today. You can hound the flea markets for the best bet. Price wise: just the best deal you can work out. If it seems high, walk away a time or two. Probably twenty bucks or so would be in the ballpark to me. Where you at? I have a spare one somewhere out in the shop. I also have the grinder with the seat on it. It had leather straps for driving it but I made new ones from 3/16" brass welding rod. My uncle Bob Rowe gave it to me years ago..Fred Martin, Greenfield,Ohio

Fred, I'm located in eastern Kentucky. The rock on this unit looks like a regular grind stone except for the width but I'm with you about trying to find one. I've looked everywhere on the net and cannot find one that wide...but I will keep trying and thanks for the message. J. Coleman
