Has anyone tried the BenzOmatic MAPP/ Oxygen set? They claim they can be used for welding, metal cutting (up to 3/16) and other jobs. They cost about $50 with the torch, hoses and gases (small containers). I'm tempted to get one for light use around the house, tractor, and hobbies, but I would hate to waste the money. Thanks for your help. albe

If you will only be using it once every 4 months or so and for smaller projects (three or four bolt cuttings at a time), you'll be all set. My brother and I used it to take a truck apart and it ended up being pretty expensive, (but so is buying or renting an acytelene / oxygen tank setup). The torch itself works pretty well for as cheap as it is, but with me being a beginner, it took me more gas than if I had more experience. Of course, I will say that I have another truck project coming up and I won't be using the small torch that you are asking about. I have a bigger setup now.

I have one and its a waste of money. It works for very small jobs but the Oxygen tank only last about 10 minutes. The O2 refills are 8 to 12 dollars. You will not regret buying a small welding setup (the ones with 2' tall or less tanks). You can exchange the tanks at a welding supply shop when they get empty for around $15. Thats a MUCH better bang for you buck!

I had one of those Benzo Matic torch sets years ago. It was a waste of time. No real regulator, hard to reset. The gas was expensive and the tank was always empty. I unloaded them and bought a small Harris aircraft torch. It has served me well over the years. It is easty to carry around and the torch can be put it in to some pretty tight areas to cut, weld or braze. I also use it often to weld aluminum.

For about $150-$180 you can get a set of real torches with the small tanks and carry case with acetylene/O2. These will do a who lot more for not a lot more money and you can have the tanks refilled instead of buying new ones each time saving you money over the long run.

I agree with Mark completely. We bought one of the Benzomatic sets to braze augars when we had no way of reaching them with a regular torch. It worked, but you had to have serveral bottles of oxygen because it didn't last long at all; and they were expensive. Wished we had a small act/oxy set.
Like Mark I would suggest your local supplier. Just like with the larger bottles you may have problems getting a bottle filled that you bought somwhere else.

Mark, Where can I get that set. A similar one at Home DEpot costs about $290.00 with the 20 cf tanks. Thanks... albe

The quality of the regulators is the big factor in the cost. Single stage?, 2 stage? Compare differences. You may want nicer gear if you plan on keeping it for years. I've had mine for 20 years.

Look in the yellow pages for a compressed gas or welding equipment supplier in your area. A guy just bought a set of these on friday when I was at my shop here and the total came to $170 (or about) with a couple extra small items added to the basic set. This is one item the local guys should be able to beat HD and other big chains all the time.
