Fuel Tank Sealing

Hey folks. I have a problem. The gas tank on my motorcycle has sprung at least three pinhole leaks. I'm really bummed out about it, since the paint was pretty much perfect for a 25 year old motorcycle. The inside is almost pristine as well, except for a few blemishes that have finally begun to eat through. I am sure a lot of you have had to solve this problem when restoring tractors, so I was wondering if any of you have used POR 15 to seal a fuel tank. I think I can get all the rust out with the tank sealer kit, or by electrolysis, but I don't want to waste my time if it will not seal the very small perforations, which sweat gas more than actually leak. The tank is no longer available, and I think it is certainly salvageable in its current state. Thanks for any advise you can give.

Roger: I've used "regular" POR-15 for this on pickup truck tanks with good results, but as Chris(WA) already mentioned POR also makes a full kit to seal motorcycle tanks. The truck tanks I have done were ones where I could take out the tops and physically get an arm and a light inside the tank so I could pay special attention to any weak spots. Seeing this won't be possible with a motorcycle tank, you're better off using a full meal deal with cleaner and etcher. I've been very impressed with any POR product I've used, and I expect this one to be the same. By the way, what kind of bike is it?

It's a 1983 GS1100E Suzuki.

I didn't think of Devcon. I use Quicksteel epoxy putty for a lot of stuff, even for gas tanks, but the outside is darn near perfect, so I was hoping a mild touch up would be sufficient. Everybody I have asked says POR15 is the stuff, so I think I'll give it a go. I'll look up Red Kote too. Thanks a lot guys.

POR-15 sells a product specfically for sealing fuel tanks. Actually it is several products, A cleaner and etcher and a sealant as I recall. Follow ALL the directions exactly and you will get very good results. I have used Kreem and Wurths sealants also. The best has been POR's.

ive used kreem on many bike tanks with good results on every one.even with pinholes. if i seal on the outside of a tank i use deavcon plastic steel putty.it works good ,rough it up ,clean with thinner and apply,i like to push it into the holes somewhat ,smooth over. lucas
