HELP!!!! I need to install a generator in a walk-in van to make a ice cream truck.Does anyone have any thoughts about possibly running a tractor pto standby generator off the transmission pto? Are the generators bi-directional? Do they have a long life? suggested sources or brands to avoid? I'd really rather not have the noise of a gas or diesel one. THANKS

I'd think about going another way. You haven't said if you plan on powering a freezer for holding ice cream noveltys, or running a soft ice cream machine, but neither application will like the frequency variation you'll get from a PTO driven generator.
You can also look at fan belt driven generators, there are at least 10 or more manufacturers with web sites, but you'll still have frequency problems.
Mr Softy trucks had a 2 cyl 7500 watt generator mounted in the back, with a shore power cable for when they were parked, and with all that generator, the capacity of the ice cream freezer was limited, due to generator capacity. It also ran the lights, and the holding freezer in the truck.
Extra noise won't be a problem, you can muffel that easily.

I agree with Franz; to get the RPM needed you will have to run the truck engine near 2k RPM. Assuming you will be using it all day into the evening, you will have a huge fuel bill. PTO generators are available cw or ccw, but I've never known of bi-directional. You can buy a 5kw RV genset for near $3k, or a home genset for around $600 and then buy the RV muffler for $100. You may even buy a Gov. surplus genset if you have access, some are already set-up for quiet running. I designed a box made of heating duct board for my 4kw genset with elect.radiator fan in one end for cooling but the RV muffler is better.
